Gateway boot options do nothing on notebook!

I can get into the BIOS and the thing tries to boot Vista, but blue screens. I was just trying to do a chkdsk /r with an XP CD, because I suspect hard drive corruption and I have already backed up the users files. It just will not boot from any source except the hard drive. It is as if the hard drive is always at the top in the BIOS list no matter what. I have tried the internal DVD drive, an external, and a bootable USB flash and no boot, just goes to the hard drive and blue screens?!?

Well if you do figure it out don't use an XP disk to try and run chkdsk. Get online and download UBCD and install the .ISO file on a bootable CD.

In there is a host of diagnostic tools you can use including a HDD scanning tool.

Just be sure your saving your setting after you set the boot order.

Time to yoink the HDD? I always find it so much easier to just plug the drive into an ol testbed or something. Even easier to format a drive from a functioning machine.
