Hey there guys. I have an old Gateway 9300 500mhz laptop I have been meaning to beef up and I had a few questions. First one is am I able to replace the huge 15.1" LCD display for something smaller? I have a pet peeve of exposing my work to others and I would really like to have a smaller screen. It would also make the laptop so much lighter. The LCD connects to the mobo via one of those small connectors (the ribbon cable thats smaller than a ribbon cable). I'm not sure what to call it. Question number 2 is, I have been told that the processor on the mobo is upgradeable to 850mhz. I was wondering if this was true. I thought all processors on laptops were soldered onto the mainboard. Anyone know if I could upgrade my processor? My 3rd question is, is there a way to cool the processor better than the system thats in place? The system it uses now is a heat transfer bracket that connects to a fan and the fan blows out of a tiny hole at the bottom. Is there a better solution that can fit in that small a space?

I hope someone can answer these. Thanks!

I have a Gateway 9300cx - and it has a gorgeous 15.6-in LCD. It is almost 2 years old and has been the best, trouble-free laptop I have ever had (my 4th one.) It came with a 750 MHz CPU - and it is more than adequate. It still works faster than I can type. :)

I have a 2.53 GHz P4 system - and all it does faster is load. Programs all work about the same. Does your LCD hang out a bit on both sides? If so you might be able to use a 14.1 inch LCD if it would cover the rest of the case for closure.

I have upgraded the RAM to 512 - and that does more good than elevating the CPU. Since this machine has never once crashed or hung up - I won't even think about diddling with it. :) Oh yeah - also upgraded the HDDs (it can take two - one in the floppy/LS-120 slot) with fluid bearing 5400 RPM drives. Those also gave a significant performance increase.

Check E-Bay for possible parts that might fit.

BTW - the cooling system has never been a problem - it rarely runs.
