I'm debating between these two laptops, and it's a hard decision because they're very similar. Both are $1399 (well, the 7422GX gets $150 off from Best Buy). The 7422 has:

Athlon 3400 (2.2Ghz) processor
1gb RAM (2 512's)
ATI 9550 (well, the computer calls it a 9600/9700) 64mb graphics card

whereas the M460XL-QS has:

Pentium M 750 (1.8Ghz, the new Sonoma chip) processor
512mb RAM (2 256's)
ATI x600 128mb graphics card

Everything else is essentially the same (the PM version is lighter and silver), but I think the 7422 HDD is only 4200RPM, whereas the M460 is 5400. Which of these two would be a better buy, assuming I want to be able to game on it, as well as occasionally lug it around and do wordprocessing on battery?

If you're not going to be using it on battery that much, the 7422gx wins hands down You get a faster processor (2.2ghz A64 vs. 1.8 PM) an extra 512mb memory, and an extra $150 in your pocket. Also, the M460XL has a 64mb x600 card which isn't that much faster than an ATI 9600 64mb.

The 7422GX will def be faster assuming both graphics cards only have 64megs of ram. the M460 will def have better battery life. Also, the x600 IS a 9600. it just uses a PCI-E interface. absolutely no performance diff between that and the "9550" (it's just a 9600. Gateway's actually marketing it correctly cause the mobility 9600 is underclocked from the desktop 9600. Same goes for the x600).

::Edit:: Just saw gateways website and it says the M460XL has a 128mb x600. If that's the case, then there might not be as big a performance diff... at least I don't know until its tested. The A64 in 7422 is def. faster than the P-M in the M460. But as far as gaming, it might be a toss up.
