Gateway 6400 Server: Refuses to go into Standby or Hibernate under Win2000

Whenever I try to put my 6400 Server into Standby or Hibernate mode,
the screen saying "Preparing to Standby" / "preparing to hibernate"
comes on, and stays on, and stays on, and stays on (left it 1 hr yesterday).
During this time, the mouse cursor will move, but no input (eg Ctr-alt-del)
from the keyboard will have any effect. In the end, I have to press the
restart button.
Fairly standard setup:
Win2000 / 320mb ram / IBM Scsi hard disk / asus cur-dls MB
Actiontec 56k modem (not winmodem) / CLabs SB16

Any ideas as to why it refuses to stand by or hibernate?
Thanks.
