Background: A Gateway 500s originally had 256 MB PC2100. The guy checked and his mobo supports 2 GB. So he bought a 1 GB stick of Curcial PC 2100. Installs it. Does not upgrade bios. Said there were major dust bunnies in the case. Did not know to use compressed air to spray out case. Turns on the computer, gets the scent of something burning and 1-1-1 beeps. Board does not recognize the ram whether it's the new stuff, the old stuff or which of the two dimms they are in. Same beeps occur if no ram is installed.

So now the computer came to me. My question is: if the board does not recognize the ram, how can I force it to see just the original stick? I've also tried using a couple of spare PC 2100 sticks, but even those aren't recognized. I've unplugged everything from the back of the case and taken out the cmos battery for several hours. Put it back together, turned it on...nada. I'd flash the bios, but without the ram being recognized, I'm not even sure that's possible. Any ideas?
