Gateway 4540/4535 opinons

Does anyone have either of these? I believe their model numbers are 4540GZ and 4535GZ. Haven't had a Gateway computer in probably 5 years, and I didn't know how well they were anymore.

I've handled them a fair bit, never owned one. Overall it seems to be a very good laptop for the money. They can be had for close to $1000 on sale @ BBY, which isn't bad for a Centrino notebook that'll get 5 hours of battery life. I give 'em a
Any particular reason why you're interested in those vs other models?

For the reason you mentioned-Best Buy has them (especially the 4535) pretty cheap right now. I was looking at a Dell 600m, but for around $1100 for the Gateway I get a 100GB hard drive, DVD burner, and 1.7 vs 1.6 CPU.

Keep in mind that last I heard those Gateways used the Banias Pentium M's: slower, worse battery life. Not a bad CPU at all, just not modern technology. Still a great value tho.
I can't suggest anything else where you get a 100GB & DVDRW, but the HP dv1000 is pretty nice for the money. If you are/have a student, you can get a pretty nice discount too.

BTW, the Best Buy warranty is actually worth it in that case. 3 years, 24/7 tech support, in-store tech support/diagnosis, free battery every year, covers everything except accidental damage. The free battery thing is great, you keep all of your existing batteries too 😀 Just my $0.02
GL and please write back if you have more ?'s

Thanks...with the new Dell deals this week on 600m and 700m, I might just go with one of those.

I was just looking at it again over lunch and the 4535 has a Pentium M 735 1.7GHz...the 600m has a 725 1.6GHz...which is the older/worse battery model?

I'm not able to find any conclusive specs online on it, but if it does indeed have a "735" Pentium M, than that is the Dothan CPU.
715, 725, 735, 745, 755 are all Dothan: 2MB L2 Cache, improved efficiency, improved battery life

The non-Dothan (Banias) CPU's generally don't have a model rating. The Gateway should have Dothan and the Dell definitely does. The performance difference between the two CPU's is almost nil. I have a T42 1.7 w/5400RPM HDD and my gf has a dv1000 1.6 w/4200 RPM HDD. The hard drive is the only place I notice the speed diff. Loading apps and stuff is almost equally fast. I would base your final decision on the battery you get and the warranty. GL!
