I have a Gateway 450sx4 laptop with a 1.8mhz cpu currently, but I can't find the proper information anywhere telling me the max processor I can upgrade to. I have seen the same laptop with a 2.2mhz but I'm wondering if I can go even faster. The laptop has the Intel 845MZ chipset. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Wow, man, I read your title as "Gateway 450x4 [no 's'] fastest CPU?" and thought you were posting from some bizarre alternate universe.

Here's information about the chipset: http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/845mp-845mz/845mp-845mz-overview.htm

Here's a list of Pentium 4 - M processors: http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-007488.htm. You'll want one with a 400MHz FSB, so it looks like 2.6GHz is the fastest you can upgrade to.

Honestly, the difference between a Pentium 4 at 1.8GHz and a Pentium 4 at 2.6GHz is significant, but not enough to make it feel like a "new" system. Unless you can get the processor dirt cheap ($20-30 or so), your money would probably be better spent on more memory or a faster IDE hard drive (if available).

Thanks for our help! I'm already maxed out on RAM and I just ordered a new HD, so now I'm looking to bump up the cpu. OK, stupid question, but would a P4-m with a 533mhz FSB work with this chipset? Would it be capable of running at 400mhz instead or is that just not possible?

I can't say for sure but from my past experience with Pentium M chips(not 4) the higher fsb ones worked but were downclocked to the chipset's supported fsb.
