Hi,

I'm looking to buy either the gateway 24" or the Dell 24". They both seem to have about the same stats. I was wondering if anyone had seen a head to head review of them online, or compared them side by side.

I'm sure they are both great, but want to know if one is truly better, (Or for that matter if there is another 24" monitor that is better).

Nope, neither is great, and probably both use same panel.

Do search for both on this forum.

Ya there's been a lot of chatter on these forums lately about the 24" panels. None are perfect, but they are very nice.

If you can get a Dell Rev. A04, its probably the best of the bunch as it can do 1:1 pixel mapping and is rumored to be an S-IPS panel (someone had a revision roadmap from a Dell Tech posted here). If you go with Dell though, you're still in the mercy of their panel lottery, so its probably better to wait (they're still shipping A03).

The Gateway can do 1:1, but some complain about blurry text and color banding. Also seemed to have an issue with the internal power supply making a buzzing sound. You can buy the Gateway at a B&M though and simply exchange it without any hassles, unlike some of the other options.

Most agree the BenQ is the best 24" in the sub-$800 range, does 1:1 and exhibits the least amount of input lag and ghosting, but carries a premium over the Dell and Gateway. There's also the Samsung but it seems to be nothing special (the Dell uses the same panel apparently) and costs $200-400 more.

What would be considered great?

Anything in that $600-700 price range?

There's probably no "great" in that pricerange; you might get "good" and that depends on your standards and needs. I can only comment on the GW - it does a decent enough job in games, but it's really up to snuff for imaging work (banding) and falls a bit short with text as well. Comments were made recently about it producing blurry text and I now have to agree, after seeing lots of different text on it.

But at least you can walk into a store, take it home and play with it for a week or 2 to make up your mind about it.

Those prices will significantly fall in next few months. Strong competition in 22" range will eventually take toll on these too. Right now 24" screen is 100% more expensive than 22".

I've looked at all three of these 24 inch panels (& currently own the BenQ) & in my opinion the BenQ is the best by a fairly wide margin, also the screens hitting the shelves in the next few weeks should all have improved firmware which eliminates the FP241W's 1:1 pixel mapping weak point, so its the one to go with for sure... you'll pay a bit more but its money well spent.

BenQ FP241W does indeed seem to be the winner here.

The general consensus is that BenQ > Gateway > Dell from what i have gathered.

And i wouldn't get to worried about the input lag issue with PVAs.

If you have incredibly sensitive eyes & you play a ton of fast paced fps titles, i could see it being an issue.
Otherwise, few people even can see it.

Really though, the best alternative is just to pony up some more cash & get the Dell 3007WFP.
Damn near godlike S-IPS quality with a stunning 2560x1600 resolution.

Fun for the whole family, & even more fun for the credit card! :D

What do you guys think of the Acer AL2416W? It seems to be in the same class as the Dell 2407wfp and Benq FP241W. The 26" Acer is only slightly more and offers the same features at the 24" Acer. I haven't seen a head to head review with the Acer against Dell, Samsung and Benq.

Here is the thread I started a few weeks back on this topic:

24" Round-Up

Consensus was that Dell Rev 04 is your best bang for buck option if you feel like playing the Dell lottery...otherwise, the BenQ seems to be a popular choice in the 24" range.

That may change if Dell is really using S-IPS panels in the 2407 A04, though. I can't wait to get some confirmation of that though, and the inevitable side-by-side comparison of an S-IPS A04 to the S-PVA A03. :)

There's 26" Acer that is interesting as well, and cots $750. Same resolution though.

I havn't seen any real reviews from hardware sites on this one yet, but the comments on Newegg were mixed with quite a few people who couldn't get the moniter to display at native resolution at all.
