My friend has a Gateway 2000 G6-450 PC with 128mb RAM and his pc wont boot at all. He tells me that it gets to a screen where it has the gateway box in the middle with GATEWAY on it and it shows a progress bar at the bottom but after it gets too 100% loading his pc freezes and wont boot to Windows!! Anyone have any idea how to fix this? or even enter DOS to fdisk? Thanx

Well he should have made a boot disk or windows 98 comes with one. If you put that in the floppy drive then reboot you'll be able to get to DOS to Fdisk. As for the rest of the problem could be a lot of things. Is this thing overclocked? If so go into the bios on bootup and restore to defalt settings or reset the CMOS on the motherboard with jumpers. Just some ideas.

No its not OC'ed but i already told him to make a starup disk for Win98 so when he boots it'll get to DOS, but see here's the problem, it wont even get to the part where the A: Drive boots so it recognizes the disk, right before its SUPPOSE to get to this step, its just freezes, so therfore the disk doesnt even work!! You have any other suggestions? Thanx for the help too

Any new components installed lately? Did you try booting with only minimal hardware and 1 stick of ram in different slots? Did he mess around in the bios or flash it recently? Any post beeps?

On the new Gateway computers there are two status bars that appear during startup. One gives you a few seconds to press a button to enter BIOS setup. The other gives you a few seconds to enter system restore mode where you can revert your hard drive to a previous point (hopefully one where everything worked). I actually used this feature once when a computer wouldn't boot and now everything is fine.

Do you know what button you have to press to enter the mode to revert your hard drive to a runing point?

My Gateway uses F2 to enter the BIOS menus on boot. It says right on the first screen with the Gateway logo.
