Gates has certainly had a long and varied career in government service. Somewhat of consummate insider, he has had his fingerprints over so many of our countries policies.

Frankly I think he has had a mixed record, when he is wrong, he is very wrong, but when he is right, he can be very right. However to Gate's credit, when he learns about making the wrong decision, he is quick to learn from his own mistake.

The other thing to mention, is that Gates is very effective, especially regarding restructuring the defense department to meet the new realities of a new century.
Nor does Gates crave media attention, preferring instead to get his work done out of the public eye.

My one sentence assessment of Robert Gates would be, as a bureaucrat excellent, as a visionary not so good.

But I find this link a pretty excellent summary of his career.

And if any find the reinvention phrase harsh, I find it more of a virtue that shows his adaptability.

Frankly, I'm surprised he didn't step down sooner. You can only put up with so much bvllshit for so long. He was being squeezed between the loony left who would love to gut the military, the politicians looking to preserve pork in their respective states, and the lobbyists for the military suppliers plus the entire military industrial complex as a whole digging its heels in against the changes and reduction of duplicity and waste Gates was making.

Sorry to see him go. He was the only one I felt who was holding out and in fact pushing back against the hordes.

That is one job that I am glad that I do not have. I agree with brencat on this one, Gates puts up with loads of crap.

I don't agree with brencat, all his working carer, Gates has effectively dealt with crap, never tried to win any popularity contests, but got the job done in spite of the constant crap.

My guess is, Gates just wants to complete the various ongoing projects he is doing now and retire. He is 66 now and will be pushing 68 when he retires. Nor do I believe he was planning to stay on as Sec of Defense past the end of the last term of GWB. And by announcing his plans to step down way early can only energize his opposition who will redouble their crap production hoping to outlast Gates. A man seeking to avoid crap and still be responsible would privately and not publicly announce his retirement date thus giving the Pres adequate time to find a replacement.

That sucks, it seemed like he had all the right ideas. Maybe he'll have some influence on the selection of a successor that will share them.

shitty, I didn't like everything Gates did, but he as a whole did a pretty good job imo.
