Interesting. Until a few years ago Gates was widely criticized as being among the stingiest uber-rich ever when it came to philanthopy, etc.

I heard he's stingy in his day-to-day life, but not when it comes to charity.

However I have heard that he only gives money when he knows its going to be used as intended.

I also know he's one of the few folks who are trying to legalize the Porsche 959 for use in the US.

That's a great stance to take. Not only giving a lot, but taking the time to be aware of where the money is actually going.

I sort of doubt he's trying to legalize the 959. He just needs to pull out the engine & tranny, and import them separately from the rolling chassis. It becomes a kit car, and you can use it just fine in the US.

What you don't realize is, most rich men will be stingy in his day-to-day life (when they are not infront of the camera). Come on now, Bill Gates is uber-rich, he is known as the richest man on earth by %99 of Americans and Europeans, and is controlling an empire that controls the OS industry. I think he has the right to be stingy even though he is not :p Without access to his financial organizer, we have no way of knowing :p

in regards to what someone said about him being stingy, he has a frekin huge wired up the wazoo house, and 80+ exotic cars. i'd go so far to say that he's careful with his money, but stingy?! he has no reason to be!

Depends on what you call stingy.

His 4 bedroom $80million dollar house surround by houses he owns that are also multimillion houses. I wouldnt call him stingy. He owns a huge swath of houses around his main living residence.

Remember not too long back when Ted Turner pledged to donate one billion dollars of his fortune to the United Nations? Then his finances quickly plummeted due to the business climate and he retracted his donation. If he's resumed it or had a reversal of fortune I do not know, however.

i wish more eschelon wealth would follow suite and help out the way his organization does. Good for him and Microsoft.

Would love to see a bunch of new schools built since most govt agencies squander the money and have none left for education. so many schools are outdated and way overdue for a facelift and upgrade.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation indirectly keeps me employed, so I have no problems with the guy.

I meant stingy in day-to-day life. Like not wasting money at expensive restuarants if not needed, or buying useless items for no reasons.

Houses are different, since he may make money of it in the future should he ever sell it and it also represents him as a technology guy. And for all we know, his house could have been his childhood dream that is now realized.
