Gatekeeper network admin rant

I come into work this morning at 5:30 a.m. to get some stuff done by 8 a.m. for a guy who absolutely positively needs access to the software by then. No problems, I'll get up early to accomodate someone who is generally good to work with (so long as I can leave early too 😉)

I go to install the software, and lo and behold, our 'Source' directory is missing. Every piece of software we've got on site is put into this particular directory so the entire systems group has access to it, and it is backed up regularly. This is, by now a massively huge directory, and *poof*, it is gone. So now I'm sitting watching an FTP session re-download software while I need to be working on it.

The guy who 'controls' this section of the network is a total tight a$$, and usually has no idea what he is doing, so although I'm not terribly surprised, I'm still pissed. He has been here since the business opened, and considers himself a gatekeeper of sorts. He's in for it today. GRRRRRRR!

\weak rant.

Cliffs for the lazy:
- up very early for work to install s/w
- try to install software, source files are missing
- going to kick the living sh!t out of the 'Gatekeeper' network admin..

What about the Keymaster?

Seriously, if the guy's been screwing things up since day one, you need to talk to your mutual superior to get him off his "position" immediately. Nuking your Source directory should pretty much do the trick.

I don't get pissed very easily, but I'm pretty livid this morning :| This is probably more than a terabyte of data I'm talking about ...

I would love to do this ... and it is another strike against him. There is already a file. This company blows at removing employees when it is needed though unfortunately. Especially computer people, since it is hard to keep employees up here.

So the 'gatekeeper' nuked the entire source directory without telling anyone? wtf? 😕

I think he was trying to move it to a different storage structure (NAS/SAN), and screwed it up royally, but didn't let any of us who use it on a daily basis know. 🙁

Boy I hope he's smart enough to have backups...

Oh god ... me too 😛 Fortunately, I think that part of his job he is somewhat competent at. It probably won't be right up to date, and will take a long time to restore. If for whatever reason he doesn't, we'll probably toss him right out the window.
