Gas station clerk refuses check and holds car as collateral

the clerk told him he wouldn't accept the check, because a check had bounced in the past.
Where the hell does that sentence say "he had bounced a check in the past"? I just see "*A* check bad bounced in the past"

Just another example of the accusatory nature of ATOT.

Where the hell in the OP does it say that a check of his bounced in the past at the specific gast station?? It could've been at somewhere else for all we know

5) Businesses have the right to refuse certain types of payments, especially from people who have a history of non-payment. I personally would've told your dad to just leave, then called the cops on him.

wow, you're a dickhead

Absolutely, I've worked in retail for years, I have NO sympathy for people who try to pull crap like this. People are not nearly as stupid or clueless as they make themselves out to be, they simply act it to try and squeeze as much as they can out of shops and businesses. His dad has bounced checks there before, he knew it, and yet he was going to try it again? That's called fraud, the clerk was 100% right to refuse it, and at that point he's holding gas that he knows he can't afford, if he had left that's stealing. A short walk home is nothing to get out of that situation, and he probably could've used the exercise.

Please point out where it says that the check had been bounced at that specific gas station in the past 🙂.

where can you still pump first then pay? I, uh, need some gas....yeah....thats it...

Ummm, pretty much everywhere. It's either pay at the pump or pump, head inside, then pay.

Some of you are assuming too much.

Station accepts checks.
You don't pay before you pump.
One bad check in the past. No history of repeated offenses.
He usually pays with a debit card, but had given it to my mom the day before and hadn't gotten it back.

Are you stupid enough to think that the gas station is aware of him bouncing a check somewhere else?

Virtually every place near me. You must live in an area with a much much higher rate of jerks who drive off without paying. But, very few places in my area accept checks for gas.

Ahhh, Texas. Another reason I won't be moving there. Must be a polite, courteous, honest, friendly area, huh?

Actually, it sure is! You'd be surprised how courteous people are when they know you're packin heat!

Last time I checked concealed carry meant that others should not know you're packing....

The clerk did the right thing. At least were I live, the moment you let someone leave to get some money or goto the bank, hes technically not stealing gas anymore. You went into a verbal agreement that he will come back so to get your money back you will need to sue them to get it (kinda like saying you will pay someone $1000 to build you a deck and once they are finished you don't pay)

I don't get it.

Is it legal? Well it doesn't sound like they physically restrained him, so he was entirely capable of getting in his vehicle and going home to get the money. But as soon as he drove away with the gas he didn't pay for, they'd have called the cops on him. So it was up to him really.

Really, don't get your panties in a bunch about it. What are you going to do, sue them?

All over the place around here...a must-pay-first station is a rarity, and pisses me off when I pay with cash, since I don't always know how much it'll take..and I'm too lazy to want to walk back in for my change.

boy you need to get out more.

Every place i have seen that takes checkes runs it through a little machine. it checks the account with a database taht has if it is a lost/stolen check or if you bounce them. If you have bounced checks it declines them.

I can't remember the name of the place (there are 2 of them). so yes the gast station is aware of him bouncing a check somewhere else.

Edit: telecheck is one!

i used to work at a gas station, we didnt take checks, if someone didnt have cash or a CC we took their licence and held it untill they came back to pay
