my aunt had a prius, and something broke on it that was going to cost $5k to fix

she traded it in 2 months ago for an escalade that the dealer was dying to get rid of at the time, and it only cost her like $3k out of pocket to get it after she traded...looks like she bought it at the right time :)

you seriously think gas is going to stay this low?

part of the problem is that the gas prices are going down because unemployment is so high. once unemployment drops, gas prices will go way up again.

Well, in Manhattan I think gas is still near 3 bucks. I dont drive but when my GF drives me around I see Manhattan gas is much higher than in the outer boroughs. Just like the fucking rent. Geez, NYC just plain rips us mid class people off.

fwiw - I just filled-up(the first time in a month) for $2.16 in Boston.

You said that not me but it will certainly crank back up on any one of the bag of excuses they have such as summer blend, refinery explosion, storm 3,000 miles away etc etc.

I just filled up at $1.85, wow I should buy an Escalade right away right?

Oh really!!! Pwn'd

It was 2.45 in central PAas of 6:30PM today, BTW.

The criminal excuses are already kicking in.

Expect $200 oil $10 gas and of course it will all be the Democrats fault.

11-2-2008 Oil Rises for a Second Day as Interest Rate Cuts to Spur Growth

Crude oil rose for a second day in New York on signs fuel demand will increase after the U.S., India and China cut interest rates to prop up economic growth and amid speculation OPEC will cut output for a second by year end.

Oil climbed 5.7 percent last week in the first gain in five weeks.

Production in Russia, the world's second-largest exporter, dropped for a 10th month in October as output from older fields declined faster than new wells were added, the nation's Energy Ministry said yesterday.

Iranian sales to Total SA, Europe's third-largest oil company, will fall by 70,000 barrels a day in line with cuts agreed by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries last month, Oil Minister Gholamhossein Nozari said yesterday.

9-17-2008 Oil prices surge as AIG bailout prompts rush to commodities

Crude oil prices surged Wednesday after the US government's lifeline to insurance giant AIG failed to reassure skittish traders and prompted a rush into commodities as a haven from the financial market storm.

"This is evident in an unprecedented flight to quality. Investor concern is also growing about the Fed's ability to support markets in the future as the central bank's own balance sheet is reduced."

I should add a poll of will oil hit $200 by end of this year?

9-19-2008 Oil prices rise past $100 a barrel

Light, sweet crude for October delivery rose $2.64 to $100.52 a barrel in early trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange after earlier rising as high as $103.64.

Crude has climbed about $10 in past three days

Edit: It finished up $6 in one day, up $13 in three days

9-19-2008 Oil jumps $6 to $104 a barrel on bank bailout plan

Light, sweet crude for October delivery rose $6.67 to settle at $104.55 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after earlier rising as high as $105.25.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil futures rose 11.54 cents to settle at $2.8978 a gallon, while gasoline prices gained 11.73 cents to settle at $2.5997 a gallon.

9-22-2008Oil spikes $25 a barrel

NEW YORK - Oil prices spiked more than $25 a barrel Monday
? the biggest one-day price jump ever

The rally, which shattered crude's previous one-day price jump of $10.75, set June 6

In other trading, gold prices shot up more than $44.30 to settle at $909 an ounce, and other safe-haven commodities also rallied, underscoring investors' uncertainly about the direction of the economy and their fear of more turmoil ahead.

"We're off to the races again," said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates in Galena, Ill. "There's a renewed scramble for commodities because of a general weakness in the dollar."

Crude has gained about $30 in a dramatic four-day rally

At this rate, crude is within striking distance of its all-time record of $147.27, reached in July.

Looks very much like Dave was predicting gas in his posts here of 200$ very likely by the end of the year. Now that it went completely the other way he's backtracking.

And milk at $6/gallon. Well it wasn't a prediction actually, it was his 'new math" method of calculating a price of a gallon of milk.

I'm looking at http://winnipeggasprices.com/retail_price_chart.aspx

When you add USA average and Canada average to the chart you can see that the difference is pretty significant.

What's with the difference?

Couple of reasons:
1) Canadian Dollar is stronger than the US Dollar right now. link
2) Canada is a net exporter of oil.

I've seen it at $1.76 at some stations in the Denver metro area. Can't remember exactly where that was though. The typical range seems to be from $1.83 to $1.97 from what I've seen.

$2.79 for premium... I filled up at $55 or so! Better than months ago @ $70+ when I stopped because I really didn't feel like seeing it turn over to $80.

You have that flipped. The USD is stronger than the CAD.

The main reason why gas is more expensive in Canada is taxes.

Not really. More like laughing at all the fuck-tards who are buying SUVs again.

I have a neighbor who ran out and got TWO SUVs last week because of these dropping prices. Consumer whore at his finest.

Edit: $1.67 a gallon here, for 87-octane.

^ for those who don't buy cars every 2-3 years, buying a car they think is most practical for every use outweighs any extra cash paid at the pump. Would you buy a small house to live in for 10 years if you wanted to start a family this year? If you're in the market, you future-proof it if you're spending that much.

For those who do buy every 2-3 years, they can buy an SUV and not feel heavily burdened should prices go back up again... they can get out of it soon enough. Or, they don't care because they drive half the mileage you do annually. Regardless, if they feel the need to pay $10k or $20k more for a larger vehicle, they shouldn't care about an extra grand or two in gas.

I've never understood the reactionary crowd, who goes out and spends $15k all of a sudden to save 5-10mpg. Calculator anyone? Secondly, are they living paycheck to paycheck that they must react to immediate conditions? What are they doing buying brand new vehicles?

If people can afford "TWO SUVs" then I doubt they give two shits about the price of gas going up a couple of dollars over the coming months.

Most SUV owners don't use the "practicality" of their SUVs at all. Those who do weren't responsible for the SUV craze, because they were already buying big vehicles beforehand.

I agree about the reactionary purchasing of new vehicles, which is stupid. Of course, some people are already in the market and just opt for something more efficient than they'd originally planned, but their are plenty of people who need math lessons.

$1.84 here.

I just got a Grand Cherokee but my assumption the gas would go up to at LEAST $3/gal so I got it knowing prices are going to get worse.

If gas hits $5/gal or more I might sell it but doubtful.

If it hits $5/gal, you won't be able to give that thing away.

Sure I could. Stupid people buy stuff all the time.

The thing is, had I really not needed an SUV for future plans I wouldn't have bought one. I don't like wasting money.

That being said, I work out of home and my driving is a lot less than your normal driver. Plus I own a car with much better gas mileage. :)
