I don't know if they were record profits but they have all posted profits so far. Up from last year.

Gas is $3.03 here (or it was last night). I keep reading about inventories being higher than last year but gas is still going up. I guess the Govt. gave up the whole investigation into the price gauging.

I for one am not going out unless I have to. Travel to work and that's it. Maybe once a week to a restaurant. It certainly won't help anything but I'd love to see more people driving less.

P.S.
I hate BS like this:
work closer
live closer
work longer fewer days a week
telecommute
ride a scooter
bike
carpool

Not always an option for people. Some people could do maybe one of those things.

And when people bring up other countries. They pay what they pay, we pay what we pay, our gas has increased in price quite rapidly over a few years. I'm sure those countries would love it if gas prices went up 100% in a few years.

What's BS about this? I've never understood why people live 30+ miles away from where they work and why people who drive in to work and work with people who do the same commute never think about sharing the driving a few days a week.

Or why people don't try commuting by bike, it's great exercise and it eliminates the need for driving to the gym after work to get in some exercise.

How bout the Country go back to horse and buggy?

How bout Rickshaws?

Flintstone mobiles?

If 51% of americans and politicians would finally come to the realization that oil is not the solution to all of our energy problems, more would get done towards finding a truly alternative and viable solution.
The problem is that this will never happen. There are lots of things that we could do as a society that would be of tremendous benefit to everyone, but in the end, most people are going to do what they feel will be of immediate benefit to them.

Like buying an SUV that gets 15mpg when gas costs $3.60/gallon when you commute 60 miles a day?

If that person whines about it, isnt it just stupidity? If not, what does it matter?

That's just nonsense.

A bicycle is a viable alternative to a car for some people. I used to work 33 miles from where I live and commuting in heavy San Diego traffic was really wearing on me so I started carpooling with 2 people I worked with who lived near me and were already carpooling together 3 days a week. On Fridays I took the Coaster (commuter train in San Diego that runs up and down the coast) and rode my bike from the Coaster station in to work which was about 9 miles one way. I did that for almost an entire year. I only drove my own car in to work 2 days a week. I went from putting 25,000 miles on my vehicle every year to about 12,000 a year.

I've been commuting by bike 2 days a week (sometimes 3 days a week) for almost 2 years now at my current job. I happen to live 10 miles from where I work. I honestly don't give a crap about gas prices because I really only fill up my car about twice a month. Gas could go up a $1/gallon and it would be a minor change in my monthly gas expense. Oh, and my car gets slightly under 20mpg. My wife's car gets 24mpg and she works even closer to home than I do and she frequently works out of the house. I put less than 6,000 miles on my car last year.

A $1/gallon increase in gas prices would bump my monthly gas bill up by about $20. Someone who drives 1200 miles a month would see a $63 monthly increase by the same change in gas prices (assuming the same fuel economy of course).

My point is that there are viable alternatives. People just seem to dismiss them all to easily for some reason. Maybe when gas prices hit $4/gallon or $5/gallon they'll start to really look at the choices they make instead of just bitching about it.

Edit-Traffic is so bad along the 15 freeway in San Diego that taking the train and cycling to work took me the same amount of time as driving. Currently, it takes me about 20 minutes to drive to work on a good day, longer if traffic is bad or there's an accident. It takes me about 40-45 minutes to bike to work regardless of traffic.

Dave you idiot, make up your mind. Do Americans have a god given right to burn through billions of barrels of oil or do you want to lower fossil fuel use? I thought only Republicans wanted to destroy the planet, but apparently you're right there with them.

Oh I forgot, you voted for Bush. You are a Republican.

QFT.

It is sad that it will take $4 and $5 per gallon PLUS gas prices before Americans begin to change their ways.

For most corporate folks, who wear a suit to work that might be an issue.

The company I work for is business casual. I carry a polo shirt, socks and underwear in a backpack. I keep a couple pairs of slacks, a pair of shoes, a towel and toiletries at work and shower there after I arrive.

There is one other guy I work with who commutes by bicycle regularly, out of a company of about 200 employees at this location. He brings his clothes in by car when he drives in.

Yeah, it doesn't work for everyone but I suspect there are many who could do it with a little planning.

Maybe Dave can start a rickshaw business in California where the gas prices are so high. Probably does not require a large amount of capital for startup.

 Sure, and maybe he could get some homeless people to pull the rickshaw!

BTW-You go to downtown San Diego and there are many bicycle taxis down in the Seaport Village/Gaslamp district.

Did you do a search for "gas" before posting this?

Don't like it, drive less.

you are an ass.

Given your grammatical skills, i think you meant to say, "u am an ass."

Not be even more pedantic, but...sux == sucks. Gas prices really sucks? Also, wasnt is singular past tense for was not. This means you are asking, "Was not gas prices supposed to go down?" You could ask, "Wasnt the price supposed to go down?" Or "Werent prices supposed to go down?" Out of curiosity what do you do for work? Slaughterhouse? Dig ditches? What?

Why are you so patronizing? No, I do not work at a slaughterhouse or dig ditches. However, I have friends who work at slaughterhouses and they work hard to take care of their families. A person should not judge others by their work. So, I am offended by your statement.

Also, who cares whether I spell something correctly or if my grammar is incorrect? I am not preparing a professional report or submitting an article for peer review. I am posting a message on an internet forum.

You must not have a life. Does it really help your ego when you are correcting someone? Further, if you were grammatically pedantic shouldn?t you use an apostrophe when you spelled wasn?t.

Anyhow, I have several graduate degrees and I work as an analyst. You may have many more degrees, I do not care. Since, I am just happy that I am not like you, a condescending a-hole.

War raging in the Middle East (Iraq) and fear-mongering about imagined boogey-men (Iran) will do that to gas prices.

Blocked me on PM? Surely that is a mistake. No problem. Here is my reply:

Advanced degrees? Working as an "analyst?" Thats interesting. So, would you mind if i shared your grammatical skills with some colleagues. We have been discussing the horrid nature of the current american educational system graduates. Mainly focusing on how so few have the basic ability to use proper grammar or develop a cogent argument and support it in written form. Do you happen to have any essays you wrote in "college" i could share? That would be great. So, just to clarify, by "several graduate degrees" you mean a masters right? Or by advanced do you mean "advanced past high school"? If you mean masters, your thesis would not be a good example to share since im sure that it was heavily edited by your adviser(s). Something written solely by you would be ideal. Thanks a lot!

omg its 2005-2006 all over again!
can we sticky a whine about gas prices thread, seems like we have one every time it hits 3 dollars, we'll have a lot more when it's 4 dollar or 5 later this year
