Could also be a factor in why Europe has an outstanding public transportation system compared to what you can usually find in the U.S.

Who are the oil suppliers for those countries?

There is a hefty tax on gasoline in Europe. This is to discourage driving and use public transportation which is actually quite good in many of the major cities.

I have a friend who lives near Zurich and she takes the train in to work every day. Only takes her about 20 minutes so her car only gets used on the weekends (she has an M roadster).

If gas was that expensive here, we would have found different means for transportation/fuel.

I used to travel to Germany for work all the time and I would always cringe when I had to fill up my rental.

There is a reason people over there hate talking to us about gas prices.

This is the difference...

You can get across an entire country by taking a train for half an hour. In my city (Tampa) It takes at least 25 minutes of halfway (avg 75mph) to get from one side to the other.

that's because they fund it with petrol taxes, which is why it's so expensive there.
Btw why does everyone call it petrol when it's EU but "gas" when it's US?

mostly norway, uk, russia, north africa, near east, i'd expect

Strange, Belarus gets its oil from Russia and Venezuela, prices are somewhere about 80 cents per liter.

Because it it technically a Petrol.. In my country, Gasoline is called Benzine, which is the real fuel name.

No, no it isn't. It's a misnomer that has oddly stuck in a few countries.

Yes, it's a blend of hydrocarbons from crude oil, but it isn't the same blend that gasoline is. If I recall correctly, it's the set that distills just before gasoline.

http://www.drive-alive.co.uk/fuel_prices_europe.html

1.68EUR/liter in Germany, 1.80EUR/liter in Italy and 1.89EUR/liter in Norway.

If my calculations are correct, that means that one gallon of petrol costs from $8.10 to $9.20. I am now talking about USD, not CAD.

Well, talk about expensive gas...
People were amazed when gas was 2 bucks a gallon here, and 4-5 in Europe. Wasn't even that long ago either.

You don't need a personal car in Europe. Anyone can get around very well with public transportation.

I remember when I spent 6 weeks in Rome I was able to use a combination of bus and train travel to get to the beach (about 45 mintes away). The pass cost about $4 and was good for 8 hours.

Yes, the main portion of gas price in EU is created by the tax BUT also the fares for buses/trains/subways are not that cheap as I recall. Especially in UK, Germany or Austria.

EU gets its oil mainly from Russia (especially Central and Eastern Europe), Near East and offshore UK.

Public transport works better in Europe than it ever would in the U.S., for various reasons including subsidies and distances.

Much of America is also just plain unsuitable for public transport or high speed rail.

High speed rail can't ever seem to support itself anywhere, either.
