There are long lines at the pumps -- people are getting there b4 the price jump -- There is no official word on whether or not this increase is justified, but there you go. $5.62 here in Lawrence, KS.

UPDATE: The price is down to $2.01 -- Gas stations are not over-full anymore, although they are busier than normal.....

I got mine yesterday

I repeat, I do not know if this is justified, or just lousy price jacking lamers. If that price isn't justified, I hope our Gov does something about them making so much $$ off this tragic incident!!

Clarksville, IN

prices varying from $4 - $5

luckily in Sellersburg its still $1.56 for 91oct.
had to wait in line for 40 minutes to fill up though :(

edit: the price listed from 4-5 is what my girlfriend told me, she lives in clarksville so I thought she actually saw it, but when talking with her later she confirmed it was only told to her by a coworker and had not actually seen it at 4-5.

If gas gets to $5.62 I think it's time to saddle up the armored cav and roll through Baghdad and Tehran. There's plenty of oil there just waiting for us to take it and the only thing standing in the way is a backwards society whose sole military power comes from crashing airliners into civilians.

It's price gouging. Yes the price will go up but not that much, probably around $0.4 or so more. Please report that gas station to your local news and state government.

It's the DEMAND. If motorists weren't freaking out, this would not be happening.

It's not exactly price gouging if they run out of gasoline. When supplies are limited, they can charge whatever the market will bear. If everyone goes to buy gas today, demand increases... That combined with supply deceases (due to refinery shutdowns) drives the market price WAY up.

The outlook doesn't look too good:

It's price gouging period and if my regular gas station decides to do that, he'll never see me again.

Exactly, it was the same in Britain last year when we had our gas crisis. The gas stations had enough for a weeks worth of normal supply but most of it had run dry in a day.
Prices were up to the equivalent of $13 a gallon within a few days when it people had just bought gas when they were running low there would not have been a problem.

Gas companies here are saying that they are going to do everything they can to keep gas prices low, until the refineries start up again. I have enough gas to last a couple days, so I am not too worried.

some dirty asshole profiting off the deaths of thousands. If that happened here, my car would somehow end up ripping out the pumps form each one.

It has to be price jacking. A guy from CNN actually said he thinks gas prices will not change much, due to a few factors.

1. Sure after something like this happens prices of everything tend to go up, but...
2. There has not been much activity in the airlines since this happened, which means that a ton of gas is being saved, that those huge planes would normally be using.
3. New York, one of the biggest cities in the world is locked down, not much traffic, so no gas use there either.
4. Also i know it is tragic, but there are gonna be a few tens of thousand less drives in NY, due to them having been killed in the trade centers.

So we should have a large surplus of gas, and if "W" wants to be relected next time around, he better realize this and put a cap on all gas, and food stuffs.

This is not supply and demand, it's profiteering and it's highly illegal. For the most part, in a capitalist society the price of a commodity is based upon what the buyer is willing to pay. In times of emergency, some commodities can skyrocket in price simply because they are essential. Things like gasoline, bottled water and canned non-perishable foods can be critical to survival and are governed by a different set of laws. You can't jack up prices on things like that in times of catastrophe and that gas station is just begging to get shut down when the authorities hear about it. Personally, I like mob justice in cases like that. If the owner gets his knees broken, it prevents others from following his example.

It's at our pathetic town now. Well the prices aren't but the rumor is. Someone started that prices were $4/gallon in a nearby town so naturally everyone here goes crazy and hits every single station in town. They are all lined up on to the road. There used to be cops at all the stations and people were beeping and swearing at each other. There is a station about 1/2 mile from where I live. I'd love to get a megaphone and drive by and call them idiots. Terrorists wanted this to cause chaos. And well it did because people (as a whole) are pathetically stupid.

Whoa Whoa Whoa..

I live in Lawrence, Kansas, and just drove by 3 different gas stations where gas is still $1.87 for super unleaded. I'm sure a few gas stations have gas that expensive, but definitely not the 3 I just drove by along 23rd street.

Its NOT all over, just the few that want to screw you.

I can believe it if they're independent retailers. Out here in CA the refineries have cut-off supply to the independents.
