Just realized that our central air system has a switch to have it be powered by gas or electric... was wondering which option was cheaper?

we've had it set to gas and our bills have ranged from $100-300 a month.

gas is more efficient in creating heat energy...

not too sure why, guess i shoulda paid more attention in my chem and physics classes

Electric baby. No gas burning here... although it's been known to come from other sources within the house. ;)

natural gas is natural resource from the earth. It just has to be transported to your house.

In most cases electricity has to be generated....converted from natural resources (fossil fuels) of the earth.

We have dual zone heating and cooling in our house (gas for the lower floors and electric upstairs). The gas system is SOOOOO much more efficient in the winter time. In the summer, they're about the same as far as efficiency.

You could just try to use the gas powered A.C. unit, but I doubt that you have one.

Pollution / efficiency concerns.
As a technology, Fuel Oil was easy to deal with in the beginning. You pour it in, burn it, transfer heat. Gas wasn't as understood as it is now. Transportation and safety issues have been addressed and the effiency is the key factor now.

it's all controlled through our central air unit

well i don't know.... we have vents all through the house. we have a few control panels that control them. you open the lid to change the batteries for the LCD display and there's a switch that says "Gas" or "Elec"

odds are your a/c is electric and your heat is gas.
edit: there is a natural gas air conditioner, but they are rare and very new.

That switch is to set up the thermostat upon install.
The thermostat can probably be used on both type of systems.
