I do landscaping a couple times a week and I would never use anything but Gas. Even for small lawns, its just so much easier and they last a hell of a lot longer.

Gas engines require a lot more maintenance than electric. Including prepping them for winter storage.

Nah, we beat the hell out of our three gas weed wackers and generally treat them like ****** and they still chug along fine. Ive had 2 electrics get shorts in them, pieces of crap.

Gas... you do ever plan on moving to a place with a bigger yard? Buy a decent gas one today and it should last you a very, very long time.

I've never done anything to mine. Never do anything to the lawn mower either.

I received my Black & Decker 18 volt cordless electric last night. I have a small yard as well. Not as small as the OP, though.

I'm charging the second battery right now. The two batteries and dual charger from my B&D 18 volt drill are compatible. Yay!

I'll post back with results.

I've had poor luck with electric trimmers. They don't last long and dragging a cord around is a PITA. After 2 POS electric trimmers I bought a gas one and it has been great. Tons more power and no mechanical issues whatsoever in the 4+ years I've owned it.

I've got a gas powered weed whacker...

adv:
1) plenty of power
2) no tether to worry about
3) can use where there is no convenient power source

cons:
1) noise and vibration
2) exhaust stinks up your clothes
3) heavier

I've been on the same electric trimmer for the last six years or so. The only thing I've ever had to replace has been the trim.

Both of mine broke. Cheap plastic junk. IIRC, I paid about $70-80 for them, one was a Black & Decker but I'm not sure what the other one was. One of the handles broke off and the other the head came flying apart while it was spinning spraying pieces out in all directions. One piece even broke the shroud.

If you have a relatively small yard (1/2 acre or less), I'd just go with an electric.

13 feet by 25 feet, minus the landing for my deck's steps :p

Electric for a lot that size. Hell, I use an electric and my lot is 50x211

Heh...he could probably go with a pair of scissors and be fine. :)

Mind you I do have a gas mower so the trimmer is just for areas where the mowere can't get to
