Gas Gauge Not Working

First this thing would bob up and down a quarter tank when I would go around turns. Now it has stopped bobbing and sits mostly at the full tank mark. When my tank is half full, the gauge reads only goes down to about 7/8. At the moment I just watching my odometer and using my mileage to predict how much gas I have.

I will probably get rid of the car, but out of curiosity, what do you suppose is wrong with it?
