I can never get over how cheap gas in the states is. Well everything is cheap. My brother in law is there with one of my nephews for a hockey tournament and he could not get over it either. They ate at a restaurant and it was like 20 bucks for both of them.

Sinclair has advertised the "dino link" for decades.

I should know. When I was a young whippersnapper, I used to ride my dinosaur down for a fill up.

85 octane regular and 91 premium? What 3rd world country is this in?

Sinclair mostly markets in the Rocky Mountain west where high elevation dictates lower octanes values.

Ah, makes sense. I know not everywhere has 93 Super but I have never seen 85 before.

Different states have different availability...I know that some will max out at 91 and others at 93....is it really just a physics thing, though? I always assumed it was some state-by-state reg, like cigarette taxes, liquor laws, etc.

Is it a bit of both? I'd assume that you can acquire and use any octane rating at any human-habitable elevation, but is there some general-safety reason not to make it consumer-available, because of inherent risk or something? Is it cost of storing and selling, at different elevations?

Come to Seattle, a basic salad is $20...want anything fancy like tomatoes cucumbers etc. it's $26+
Gas is still "cheap" at $3.50/gal or so. I do recall gas under $1/gal and near $5/gal here.

I remember travel in japan, back when the conversion was 70 yen to the dollar.
Not just the gas, but all the tolls too...cost like $240 for a friend to drive us from the airport to where we stayed.
Fortunately their mass transit was/is vastly superior to ours and reasonably cheap.
I actually much preferred being able to just easily hop on a bus or train vs driving in the US.

I'm in Grays Harbor county. Gas (Arco AM-PM) was $2.95 yesterday...but you're right about prices here. We moved back from CA in 2012. Meals that would have cost $15 there were $20-$25 in Kitsap County. I paid $10-12 for a good haircut in a barbershop in CA, $16-$20 in Kitsap...and here. In Ocean Shores, add $5-$10 for meals...we call it the unofficial Ocean Shores tax. Gasoline here is $3.49.

My dad lived in Aberdeen/Hoquiam for a short while...what a s*t hole.

There's a house near where I'm staying that recently sold for over $400,000
It was filled to the brim with garbage, had 5 feet of standing waste water and was to toxic to enter.
If you want a house to actually live in you have to pay a lot more than that.

Most people make $5-10k/month here and bitch about prices, I make just over $1k a month.

yeah, Seattle real estate prices are bonkers. Add to that the high crime rates and stupid taxes...no fucking thanks. And yes, I agree. Aberdeen/Hoquiam ARE shitholes. The first time we drove through, from Bremerton going to Westport, we saw people shooting up right on the street a couple of times. No thanks.

Always wet windy and cold to add to the misery as well.

I honestly have no idea why my dad moved to that area.
I know it wasn't a money issue, and it certainly wasn't because he liked the ocean.
He did have to move out from where he was, and I think he may have literally thrown a dart at a map of WA.

Ever seen the movie "Gran Torino"? My dad is quite like that...a grumpy old vet who still very much knows his shit and can still shoot down a thrown coin.
He's been blown up, shot, stabbed, and had limbs smashed off to many times to really physically fight, but he might one shot you with a metal arm/leg.
Imagine a dude like this, in the rain on the rotting porch of a shack in Aberdeen, looking out over the flooded yard at all the shit around him.

He was very very unhappy...and all his tools and everything else rusted and rotted like crazy while he was there. He moved out after a year.

After living in the heat and dry of NorCal for 25 years, we moved to western WA for the rain. We like it. It's definitely not for everyone. We drive the beach at least a couple of times every week...and it sounds like your dad and I might get along just fine.

Yes, Seattle prices are nuts -- but no nuttier that big cities in California. My son just moved from Portland to San Francisco for a new job and he sure isn't finding $15 meals or $12 hair cuts there. And there's no shortage of sketchy street activities either. At least there is no state income tax in Washington. And at least for now, fewer wildfires.

no, even a cup of fucking coffee will be close to $15 in SF. :p Real estate prices and nutty liberalism in both Seattle and SF are out of control. Inusedto say you couldn't payme to live in a big city. Nowadays, I suppose you could...but it wouldn't be cheap.
I much prefer towns under 50,000 population...and the smaller the better...even if I have to live without some of the conveniences found in big cities...like good restaurants, quality healthcare, etc.

My actual wage is probably a lot lower than that.
Last project I did was to manually break out concrete and lay pavers.
Took me 3 months, and I got paid $600.
Had Thanksgiving and Christmas mixed in there, and I did get a lot of free food.

I don't have a regular full time job, I take what I can get and help who I can.

jeezus...fuck that shit. Got a criminal record? If not, apply for an apprenticeship at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton...or get a job with the state ferry system.

No kidding. Even a janitor makes more money. I would suggest fast food but you could not pay me enough to do that job, but yeah that's an option too.

I kinda feel bad making 30 something an hour just to watch screens. It's 3 4k screens filled with stuff, but still, not really that hard a job tbh. :p Keeping this gig for as long as I can, but I do need to seriously start thinking about a backup plan as I won't have this job forever, it's too easy to automate.

Unfortunately my user name isn't a joke, I am actually officially retarded.
Not that I can't work, but I definitely got taken advantage of anywhere I did try (including fast food).
Without the exorbitantly expensive paper that claims I'm qualified for a job, well let's just say there's certainly other candidates more fit.

Decided it absolutely wasn't worth struggling for a minimum wage job. Spend my entire life working just so I could afford to work? After taxes and all the other stuff it's not like it made it any easier to live here. Decided I could get by doing my own thing, and I've managed to survive for years now. I might eat other peoples garbage, or literally wear a dead mans outfit...but really the worst part is just that no matter how frugal I am and how much I try to save I can't really get ahead of inflation. I'm not entirely out of options, I'm sure if I really really tried hard I could figure something out. I just haven't been desperate enough to do so.

Also I've gotten more and more disgusted by society, it's greed and vanity. It literally turns my stomach the shit I see and hear people say. How little they care for anyone or anything except themselves, and how nothing is ever good enough. Forget about caring for the stuff they do have, most people don't even give a shit about basic human rights and privacy...willing to sell their souls to get their digital high. Doesn't stop them from bitching about the government and politics they refuse to understand. I'm really not interested in joining that world at all.

You know, in the grand scheme of things I've got a pretty good life. I have shelter, clean water, I get enough calories, I've got a couple nice things (like a computer/internet and a vehicle), and despite how frustrating or harmful it is I still keep helping others...so I think my humanity is still intact. Ha that word feels just like "common sense", neither one is really a quality of most humans anymore. I'm literally getting a sudden headache and feeling tired and ill. I can barely think enough to form a sentence now, I'm going to have to cut my rant short and just concede that I'm a cynical asshole. Maybe I'll edit this or continue the rant after some rest, it looks like it's 3:42 AM currently.
