I made this a few years ago and recently uploaded it to google documents. It allows you to see what impact shortening your commute or changing cars would have to you financially. You can also see exactly how much more you pay per month when gas goes up in price. Feel free to check it out. Just, PLEASE, do not edit anything outside of the yellow fields. Of course, you can save it and do with it however you please.

I think a maximum of 50 can edit the document at once so we'll see how crazy it gets. If someone else is changing stuff while you are in there, just save your own copy.

Hmm my old car and my new bike have about a $120 difference per month. Should pay for itself over... 4 years or 70K miles... damn. Not sure if it can go that long.

Don't forget to take into account rising gas prices. Payoff for a fuel efficient vehicle may seem long right now but it will get smaller as gas goes up.

I saw that someone added a yearly comparison. Good idea. I made it a little nicer looking. I also added 55mpg to the "quick glance" for the Prius/TDI lovers. 🙂

Between my wife working from home 3 out of the 5 days...and driving a car that gets 40mpg when she does go to the office and me flying all week...our gas consumption has come to about $10 a week...I'm not complaining.

I think you might just want to add in airfare when calculating transportation costs...

Yep. Click on the File tab which is all the way to the left and choose Copy from the list. Then you can do whatever you want with the copy and it won't be shared with anyone.

Folks, DO NOT EDIT anything other than the YELLOW blocks. Someone typed over my nice formulas. Grrr...

edit: All fixed. A month for ease of calculation is 4 weeks. That means 20 weekdays and 4 weekends (which is two days). Thats why when I calculate a year, its multiplied by 13 and not 12. Also, for the "Gas Cost Per Gallon", I use nested if statements to determine the cost based on what octane you chose in the cell above. You shouldn't be typing anything in that cell.
