So the guy came and did a meter reading (enbridge)

Normally we got charged about $80 a month (estimated)

My bill now is over $1k and apparently it's because it reflects the actual amount of gas we were using over the winter months.

I have to read the meter when I get home and check, but the lady at enbridge said that a thousand dollar charge over the winter months is normal for heating a home.

I had no idea they did this, the roomate who handles the gas bill didn't either.

Does that sound iffy to anyone?

totally sounds like they need to send someone that can see over to your house so they can re read the meter.

cheers!

Most gas and power companies will charge you an estimated rate from previous usage until they read your meter (you probably knew that). But it depends how long its been since they last read your meter. You might be able to call them and ask to have them prorate the unusually high charge over the course of 2006.

In that case I would ask for a second reading and call an inspector for leak detection.

Edit: Although 5months @ 200 bucks a month = $1000. They might be right about your usage. What is your historical usage for last year.

So they just bill you for a few months at a time? I thought everyone got billed monthly for that stuff. BTW, my gas bill peaked at $300 for one month last winter. Fvckers.

wouldn't it be closer to 300 bucks a month if they were paying $80 a month ?

Yeah but we've been paying $80 a month, so $280 a month? I dunno it sounds sketchy.

I will defiently ask for a second reading.

Depends where you live. I'm on Canada/US border Near NY. I paid well over $1k this winter so if your in a northern state $80 a month is too low. If you are in a northern state then a 1K bill is acceptable (if you ignore there stupidity). If you are in a southern state then fight it.

Your in TO and you only paid $80 a month you should have thought something was wrong. Plus our rates almost doubled in Feb. I am 3 hours from TO and have been paying 130 a month (170 after the hike).

Well I'm stuck at work and my roomate apparently can't figure out how to read the meter (he's at home) so I'll have to do it tonight.

Ugh this blows!!!

Yeah, for a toronto winter, 80/month is way too low. I live in Minnesota by the way. That gas bill is probably right; unfortunately for you.

I think the gas bill for my house pushes $500 a month, companies are getting ridiculus.

I dont think I had a bill that broke 300, until i came up short one month and had to carry over a balance.
Next month sucked balls to pay, thats for sure.

I had a gas bill show up in the 800 range, and they said it's because they misread it the prior few months and had way undercharged me. I looked at my gas usage and all seemed likely and the numbers matched, so I told them I would pay, but they could not expect an $800 check from me because of their mistake. I told them I would gladly pay the $800 over the next 3 months and they said that would be no problem since they made the mistake. It was just stupid, how do you read the meter wrong 3 months in a row? My guess is he just added a little to the reading to save time so he wouldn't have to get out and actually do his job.

Damn, your guys' gas bills look like my electric bill during the summer time :p. Well maybe not as much because I'm in an apartment :).

When I was in undergrad, we rented an old house near campus with natural gas heating. It wasn't uncommon for that to happen to us too, we'd get regular looking bills, then one month it'd be insane.

I'm so glad I moved out. The house was impossible to heat, we kept it at 60 most of the time and put that window-sealing plastic on all the windows. The front door leaked so bad we had to seal it off entirely with that clear plastic and use the back door.

Then in the winter, since there was no attic ventillaton, the heat would just build up in the house and not go anywhere, so the upstairs would be insanely hot. My room was in the basement and after long periods of hot weather, it'd be the same temperature in there as the rest of the house (not cool like a basement usually is). We'd run electic bills of $200+ each month in the summer because we had window+ceiling fans going in every room 24x7.

I'll never live in an old house like that again if I can help it. New construction rocks!

I'm looking at some of your gas bills and I'm envious. We were slammed with a $700 bill this past December (close to $3000 over the winter) in NYC.
