Gary Gygax has died.
If you don't know who he was I guess you never played RPG games.
Sad to see him go.
He influenced my teen years quite a bit.

For those who don't know of his legacy:

MILWAUKEE (AP) - The man who co-created the game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon is dead.

Gary Gygax (GEYE'-gaks) died this morning at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee.

His wife, Gail Gygax, says he had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm.

Gygax and co-creator Dave Arneson developed the role-playing game in 1974 and it went on to become 1 of the best-selling games ever. Dungeons & Dragons is considered the grandfather of fantasy role-playing games and has influenced video games, books, movies and inspired legions of adoring fans.

Gygax' wife says he always enjoyed hearing from the game's devoted fans about how the game influenced their lives.

It is almost too much to get my mind about. But I've just had news that our dear Dungeon Master has passed away. Ernie called this morning, he thought we should let the fans know. He's just sent an email out.

Gary was in his home when he gathered himself up to cross the great divide.

He was a very dear friend of mine. And I will miss him so.

God Speed My Friend.

A sad day for gamers. Without D&D we might never have had:

Planescape: Torment
Baldur's Gate I - II
Star Wars: KOTOR I - II (used D&D rules)
"Gold Box" games
Neverwinter Nights

plus non-computer D&D of course.

I don't think you would have the rpg you have now if it weren't for Gygax.
He did more in his life to make rpg what it is than anyone else.
The whole idea that games like WOW are based on , are some of his creations.

You may have played pretty video games that claim to be RPGs, but if you've ever played a real RPG, anything like D&D, then you would've heard of this guy. Since he kind of like, invented the whole genre.

You can never find a healing potion or staff of resurrection when you really need one.

RIP Gary.

He tried to destroy the human race by making it impossible for males to reproduce while they were playing his game.

I've played those D&D-type video games too, but I never heard of Gygax. Just b/c I know what type of RPG it is, and that I know it follows D&D rules, doesn't mean I know the original creator of D&D. I never played D&D. ...and I really don't care about its history.

I recognize the influence he had, for sure...but there is no reason to assume that everyone who has played an RPG MUST KNOW who Gygax is..

Or did he save the human race by providing a distraction to males who had no hope of reproducing? ;)

Damn. I played Basic D&D as a kid in the late 70s and enjoy his games and their offshoots to this day.

RIP, Gary :(

Probably headed for the Upper Planes as we speak.

D&D was truly the first hobby I can remember. It lead to my love of books, PC games, and fantasy.

RIP GG!

If he is just at 0 then he really isn't dead yet. Just mostly dead.

Said by my buddy's cleric, after my character took a delayed blast fireball to the face:

"sweep him up and I'll see what I can do with him"

RIP Gary and thanks for my pre-adolescent nerdiness.

I shall hoist a flagon of good ale at my group's annual weekend retreat.
For the last 5 years us old high school pals and asorted acquaintances have rented a cabin and gamed hardcore for a solid 3 days. Last year we finished our initial campaign characters ended up 20th (or dead). And are starting a new campaign.

Thanks Gary!
