So I picked one of these up last week. Yesterday was the first real test when I took it to downtown Louisville. Before this, my only experience with a car GPS unit was an older Magellan Roadmate 300. There is simply no comparison.

The RM-300 would sometimes take a minute or two to acquire or reacquire satellites (which is awfully annoying when you know your next turn is just up ahead somewhere and the RM300 happily announces that it's searching for satellites again). In contrast, the c550 acquires satellites in 3-5 seconds. Hurray for SiRF III chipsets.

Another big improvement is route recalculation. It would usually take the RM-300 a few seconds to notice that you missed a turn and another few seconds to come up with a new route (which, more often than not, would include instructions to "make a legal U-turn..."). The c550 seems to notice missed turns and recalculates routes almost immediately and so far it hasn't told me to make any U-turns.

The audible street names feature generally works well but the thing I really like was the audible exit ramp numbers. Especially useful when you're downtown and have 2 exit ramps within a couple hundred feet of each other. Much easier to hear "Take exit 5B..." than to hear the RM-300's *ding* and have to look at the screen to see which exit it wants.

Quick followup. Sometime in the last week the unit seems to have stopped recognizing when external power is present. It seems to function fine just appears to be running on battery power only. Guess I'll find out tomorrow how good Garmin's customer support is...

The c550 was a good choice.

I was going to get one, but I finally got my Amazon.com gift certificates from doing online surveys and so I got a c580 instead. They're pretty much identical except for the traffic receivers. It's fast just as you have experienced. The screen is great compared to other GPS units out there. The built in MP3 player is nice as well since I don't have an iPod and can now listen to MP3s when driving.

Is that free or is there a monthly fee for that service?

The c550 uses the RDS-TMC technology and ClearChannel radio for its traffic service. The c580 uses MSN Direct for it's traffic, weather, gas prices, and movie times / locations. I think you get a year of free service RDS-TMC / Clearchannel with the c550. With the c580 you get a year subscription to MSN Direct.

What online surveys? How many did you have to fill out? Inquiring minds want to know! :)

I do surveys for Lightspeed Panel and TestSpin. Takes awhile though as you have to accumulate points to get the Amazon gift certificates. The $95.00 Amazon gift certificate I used was from a couple of months worth of online surveys.

Update: On a whim, this morning I tried a coworker's c530 12V cable. It worked. So my problem is a bad cable, not a bad GPS unit. I'd already been in contact with Garmin customer service via email (I'd already exchanged 2 emails by 10am!) so I relayed this new info. By 11am they'd issued an RMA for my defective cable, instructed me to overnight it and gave me a UPS account to bill against. I should have my replacement cable early next week.

That, my friends, is how a customer service should work. Kudos to Garmin.

I am currently going through the exact opposite with Magellan. Customer Service is just awful, both phone and email. I'm buying a Garmin next time, which is pretty soon.

My C350 (iirc) should be here today. We bumped form the 330 (which was on sale @ cabelas for $199) to the 350 for the audible road stuff....got it on Amazon for $220 or something like that. The nice thing is we needed it for a trip next week. My wife called Amazon about the free shipping (worried it might not show up on time) and they bumped her up to 2 day shipping, and gave her a credit to make the 2 day shipping free.

Glad to hear you like yours, I"m looking forward to playing with mine.
