Garmin GPS question

My cousin's been looking at these models for his parents. particularly the nuvi 255W

my question is does anyone know if the unit's built in voice can speak in any other languages, namely Chinese (Cantonese) because I know a very old model of Tomtom does it (my friend showed me) but i have no idea if Garmin has this feature. Checked Garmin's and some other product specs site and didnt seem to say anything about such feature.

Damn, I just gave the nuvi 255 to my parents a couple days ago and I had it set to speak Chinese (Mandarin). I didn't check if it had Cantonese options. I'd like to note that the TTS feature won't work in that language and it'll revert to "in 0.1 miles, turn left" type instructions.

thanks dude. at least i know another language is there, but when does it actually speak the language you selected, if they wont do it for "turn left, turn right" etc

i understand street names cannot be translated, but the instructions itself should be preloaded into the unit?

When you go into the menu where you select the language, the ones that will actually say the street names will say "TTS" next to them.

my son has a nuvi(not sure what model), you can download different voice files for it. Some are not as loud as others and that makes it difficult to hear at highway speeds.

I have a Nuvi 360. It does tell you the directions in Canto (at least the turn left/turn right and the distances, etc) I'm pretty sure it didn't say the street names in Canto (it would be somewhat difficult to translate) but it definitely said the direction to turn and the distance. (I'm assuming you'd basically have the same thing as a non TTS setup)

For a long time people loved the Garmins because you could select an English butler as the voice.

I was the understanding that the 200 series wouldn't speak street names... I have the 350, but haven't tried the different languages.

yes it does (I have a nuvi). It just won't translate the exact street names into canto. You can also change the entire interface into a foreign language, which is quite nice.
