My girlfriend told me of this old remedy when I told her I had a sore throat. does it really work? How many times a day are you supposed to do it?

Yes it works. Two or three times a day should do the trick. Dissolve the salt in hot water and gargle away. Tastes nasty as hell, but then it's not like over-the-counter lozenges and sprays are especially tasty either.:disgust:

I like to use Coke.

Whether it's actually doing any good or harm, I don't really know though. But the immediate after effects of it are good. :D

oh I'm definitely not swallowing salt water! That would probably make me throw up. It just makes my throat REALLY dry. I live in Colorado so the climate here is really really dry...people here actually drink the recommended 8 glasses of water per day. Its rough on my throat to do this.

Last time I had strep throat, I gargled with Listerine in addition to salt water. That seemed to help.

i dont think coke would work...salt water soothes the tissues, dissolves mucus, and disinfects mildly. with coke you're probably supplying the bacteria with sugar foodstuffs... :D. but then maybe the carbonation kills it.

Well, the Coke gives a sort of "burning" effect when you take a mouthful of it, tilt your head back and let it flood your throat. It does soothe the throat for a while, especially when all the gas hasn't escaped from the drink yet... but of course, like you said it's all just sugar so I guess only a doctor or dentist would know for sure....

have you tried those other ones-- they taste like your sucking on a penny (becuase of the zinc in them) but they really work well
