they have an episode about that in fact it was Petoria, in season 2. It also features Patrik Duffy, who exclaims, "who's family guy?"

I think they do but they probly hear what he says as baby talk, goo goo and such, that is just for the parents it seems.

I think jon can understand garfield from the strips that I have read.

In the early strips there was a clear line that Jon could not understand Garfield. Over the years the line has been blurred to the point where the use of a thought bubble by the animals is meaningless.
