Just as long as it doesn't frost where you're at, you should be fine planting them now. Keep them watered.

I was going to plant in pots, and I was going to get a special 'small' variety you can't get plants for here. That and most of the plants are sold out.

Where are you located? You can check SUNSET magazines website for planting info.

Photo period will be important consideration.
Check for # of days until maturity, anything longer than 60 days will be hard to get good results from as you will be in a rapidly diminishing daylight period.

i wouldn't start them from seed. why bother? buy a few little tomato plants and put them in, it will only take about 6 weeks for them to start producing.

after 5 years of being a homeowner, the wife & i decided to start planting in pots around our patio.

it's ungodly the amount of money mature plants cost!

i ordered a bunch of plants at michiganbulb.com on a 67% off sale - that goodness I did. every plant was bareroot (which is apparently industry standard), and they were all 4-6" tall. buying them at their retail prices would have been highway robbery - all the plants are doing well so far..

edit: oh rob if you're talking about topiaries and other fancy plants i can definitely relate!

Yep, you'll need to buy some pretty large plants. Some that are flowering already.

I'm in KY and about to get my first ripe tomatoes this week.

It's really too late to plant tomato seed and expect anything much from them. If you didn't start them months ago, don't bother. When I start them from seed, it's in January-February, indoors, then I move them outdoors when they're big enough and the ground is warm enough (around here, it's usually about mid-May, sometimes a bit earlier.)

What do you define as 'ungodly'? I dont think I spent $20 on my entire garden of emerging plants, and it's a full 15'x20', I'd guess around 40 plants.

you're saying your plants cost .50 each? where did you get them?

2'-3' palms cost anwhere from $50 - $100 each (I refused to buy).

i've been looking for elephant ears - only 1 place i've found locally had them and they were 14.99 for a 2' plant in 8" pot. - I wound up buying 5 from michigan bulb for 6.99 each - and they were only 12"-16" tall with "ears" maybe 3" across.

we bought 2 bouganvilleas on sale at $10 a pot. we just bought 2 hibiscus for 16.88 each, 2 mexican heather at 10+ each. We needed some shrubs and bought 6 Texas Mountain Laurel in 8" pots for abotu $8 each and they are only 12"-16" tall.

We actually got lucky and found 2 Yucca trees for 9.99 each that are 3' tall.

Now, I'm looking for a Spanish Dagger plant such as this but larger to place where my fence meets the driveway.

if you have a source for inexpensive plants, please share!!!!!!

If you have local small market plant stores and farmer's markets, you could get a four pack for $2.50 and a flat for $20.

These plants will be tall and not flowering because they are root bound by the small cups they are in. Not to worry because you can bury the plant up to half is size (no more than 20") and this will actually help the plant to grow.

Also, make sure the soil is the right pH for tomatoes (usually adding peat or planting soil from a bag) and feed the plant right away. I think you can have it flower in about 30 days after planting. Remember that it is not exactly about the cold that keeps it from producing fruit but lack of pollenation.

basic stuff

I'm pretty sure that iamwiz82 is talking about growing a vegetable garden, since that's what this thread is about.

Good link MaxDepth.

I use potting soil and also earth boxes. The earth boxes work really well because you don't have to water constantly. On soil pH and blossom end rot I mix in some lime with the soil, never had a problem since. The one key thing to tomatoes is they are heavy feeders and need plenty of water. So feed and water them.

I'm battling some tomato hornworms at the moment. Found about 12 of them on saturday and another 8 on sunday, 6 on monday all on a single plant. Those little buggers can REALLY devour a plant in just days. I just snip them in half, they don't seem to like that very much. But those are MY maters.
