I am trying to start a flower garden for the first time ever. I got a whole bunch of flower bulbs at the store, will they grow this season or do I have to wait a full season to see any results from them?

thanks!

some oriental lilies, some gladiolas (sp?), and some ornamental grass so far.

keep in mind each plant will be a different height.

glads are tall and pretty but they fall over easily.

My favourites are california poppy, lupins, foxglove and lavender. I also like sweet alyssum.

I am not very fond of bulbs.

Sorry I do not know too much about flowers, but I know a lot about growing vegetables. If you need any help in that area also I am here. :)

look the individual flowers up... they could be perennials or biennials

Dude, you know much about growing tomatoes?

Edit: I thought you lived in New Jersey before... do you really live in CA?

I worked at a farm that sold produce and also plants and flowers, as long as everything to go with them. I can tell you from what I saw on a daily basis that if you just buy top soil and plant anything in it, you won't be very happy with the results. mix it with some peat moss and miracle grow, and you will do much better. in addition, if you have something that requires high sunlight, then that means you must water every day. usually more than once, and drench them as much as you can. you will be glad you did that when your plants don't die in a week from lack of water in high sunlight. a flower or plant is like a computer processor. it needs proper cooling.

remember to get some dowell rods. stick them in the ground, and wrap the tomato vine around them. its just a bigassed stick, so if you cant find any i also found in a pinch that a broken gold club shaft works famously.
