Garbled screen when upping FSB to 190mhz+

Hi all,

I've got a problem trying to up my fsb above 190mhz. My system has the following specs:

AMD athlong XP 1700+ (Thoroughbred rev. A, o'cd at 1.53ghz, 1800+ equivelent)
cooled with Thermalright AX7 with themaltake smartfan with a vantec tornado blower right next to it.
Epox 8k5a2+ mobo (kt333 chipset)
256mb corsair xms3200 c2
120gb WD special Ed.
Gainward geforce3 ti200
WinXP w/ service pack 1

Since the bios on the mobo allows me to choose whatever FSB and multiplier I want without unlocking the cpu, I went ahead and set the multiplier to 7 .5 and the fsb to 190, leaving still at 1700+ speeds but with higher fsb for pc2700+. Everything looks fine. I then lowered the multiplier to 7 and pumped the fsb to 200mhz. I get garbled veritcal lines comming down the screen, but system appears to boot okay. heats up to 45*C. Restarted and lowered fsb to 195mhz, but same effect, although less severe. The on screen garbage is present from the bios initiallization to windows xp booting up. When fsb is set back down to 190mhz, no on screen garbage... At first, I thought it was the processor being crappy since thoroughbred A's are poor o'c'ers, but found out I can o/c using higher multiplier up to 9 at 190 mhz fsb for up to 1.71ghz no problem... My question is: if it's not the processor, than what component is holding me back? Ram shouldn't be the culprit since xms3200 can run beyond 230+mhz no problem. Could the problem be with the vidcard or mobo? Any input/advice apreciated since I'm trying to hit DDR400 speeds.

Hey, you're doing much better than I ever did with an 8K5A2! I have that board, PC2700 DDR, and an old Matrox Millenium G400, and if I try to set the FSB over 168 I get video errors!

My system is running at 2083.8 (166.7x12.5) with an XP1700 T-bred B, but it refuses to boot at 170 or over, no matter how everything else is set! In my case, I know the memory is also a factor, but I agree with the guys above that it's probably an AGP/PCI issue...

ummm, okay, after searching through the bios menus, I can't seem to find any setting to alter the agp/pci ratio.... the closest thing is some AGP direct access value in advanced bios settings, and it says to input some HEX value, and not a number (didn't touch it). How would one change the ratio?

Short of some mod hack, nothing!!! Unlock the chip and set it to whatever multiplier that gets you as high and overall clock speed with a minimum 166fsb. Keep it in spec agp/pci and avoid those hassles....

7.5x190 = 1,425mhz ***fine***

7x200 = 1,400mhz ***problems***

conclusion fsb too high...get a newer nforce if you want high fsb and locking options...otherwise keep it close to 166fsb....

Shouldn't this chip be going into the 1.8-2ghz range??? All this waste for getting higher memory bandwidth...That wont offset the 333-533 more mhz you could have...In a lot of things raw speed wins out. I have maybe seen in some apps where 440mhz ddr for me was equivalent to a cpu running 100-120mhz faster with 333mhz ddr.

Well, I can clock it at 1.73ghz at 165mhz FSB with default multiplier of 10.5 at the highest, but then I won't have fast ram.... plus it's unstable with random crashes. Thoroughbred A's are crappy o'cers anyways, need a rev. B in order to get any faster.... probably should invest in a mobo also, but I just got this during the months before the first kt400 chipsets launched.... prolly have to wait awhile before I can scrounge up enough cash for said items.... thanks all for the input....

Oh yeah, not that I'm gonna attempt to do this, but where can I find some info on the AGP/pci ratio mod hack? All my searches have been turning up links to voltage mods, which doesn't help me...

Well try dropping it to 9.5x...you likely can run 170's for fsb and be above the pc2700 specs you wish to run....

Remember this is always a balancing act between cpu speed and ram speed to achieve ultimate perfromance with no sacrifice to stability. Each of the first 2 things can be good in certain apps so you need to test your system to your needs....

I though all the tbred 1700's were rev b's.....Have you begun to up the vcore yet??? You should be able to run them up to 1.8-1.85v with a decent cooler....I think 1.8ghz is attainable if you are still running default or close to for vcore...

tried it, vcore doesn't seem to make a difference... I just can't seem to get the speed any higher... I tried increasing voltage from 1.5V to 1.7V in .5 V incraments, and it always refuses to post, requiring a reset with the INSERT key held down. The smaller rev. A core just doesn't dissapate enough heat... And with regard to thoroughbred rev. A's and B's, anything under xp2400+ can be either A or B depending on the serial number... places like newegg.com charge a premium for a gauranteed rev. B, but if you buy just a regular 1700+ without specific serials, you can get either palomino, rev. A, or B. It's all a matter of chance...
