I put service pack 1 for windows 7 on a spindle and a ssd drive.
The left over old file size was 550meg in size on a spindle drive with a older win 7 install.
The left over old file size was 907meg in size on a ssd drive with a hour old clean 7 install.
Is this do to ssd garbage collection.

It is probably due to it being a clean install. If you aren't using the "offline" or "network" installer for the Service Pack, you are streaming what your OS install needs to be updated to SP1. With an older install if you had allowed Windows Update to run periodically, you would already have some of the stuff needed. With a fresh install you will need all of it.
