The chain gear has broken on the main unit.

Questions:

1. Can you just replace this gear?
2. If not, how hard it is to replace the whole main unit? For that matter how hard is it to just replace the gear? It definitely looks like I am going to have to take apart the unit to even get to the gear.

Thanks for any advice.

There was about a 5 page article on how to do exactly that in Family Handyman err, uhh, (with as much detail as the OP) some do-it-yourself magazine just a few months ago. You may be able to find it online. Looked to be a rather easy repair, but probably depends on the brand.

i had a craftsman and found they sold the gear sets online or at some sears part outlet or something. so you probably can find it out there.

the gear i had to replace was a worm gear i think, in any case it was plastic and ground down along with the regular gear it meshed with. i'm sure it won't be that hard if its made decently, the parts are probably meant to be replaced at some point, and these things are rather simple, take off the cover, there isn't much in there. i removed the motor, but the repair kit had instructions. you might even find a tutorial on youtube.

The gear is most likely attached to a shaft that is eventually turned by other gears or a motor. you can probably replace it.

This is one of few situations where I don't think duct tape would work, but it's always worth a shot. If all else fails just throw a whack of WD-40 in there. Those are the only two tools you ever need.

Sorry , yeah it's a chamberlain Lift Master model 1260 1/2 HP opener. I already replaced that white gear a few years ago. The gear that moves the chain has broken off the shaft. That's the one I am asking about.
