WTF is wrong with these people?!?! Our neighbors had a moving sale last week, started at 9am. But 8:45am we had vehicles cruising our cul de sac. OK, that's fine I understand you want the best deals. These self absorbed jackasses park in front of people's driveways. They could drive 20 feet and fine a curb to park by but they don't. They drive to fast looking at the sale with their heads turned not even watching the road. They park facing the wrong direction. They walk across the middle of the road. GD they are annoying....all to try and get a POS used piece of furniture for $25, or talk the owner down on his 3 year old DVD player from a buck to 45 cents??

I was at the post office this morning, and some bimbo parked in the handicapped space, instead of a regular space twelve feet away. She didn't have a handicapped tag.

People are pigs.

There is profit to be made, and the competition is fierce.
I'm not kidding. I have members of my extended family that make 60-80k a year on yard sales. To be good at it you have to be ruthless.

I do not....but I'm sure the new owner will be re-selling it on his/her garage sale in 6 months, so you'll probably have another shot at it then. I'll keep you posted.

Do you mean the people who buy the stuff make money? Like they are antique hunters of some sort and buy older stuff and re-sell it? Or do you mean they just sell a lot of their own stuff. I don't know how you could make that much money buying mostly junk and re-selling it.

I'm not doubting it, but I guess that's why these people don't have 5 seconds to find an actual parking spot and wait before they run across the middle of the street.

Yes, they are junk pickers. They find stuff you are selling for $2 and resell it for $30. You would be surprised how much stuff at a garage sale is worth considerably more then it is being sold for. The key is having some way to resell it. My cousin runs a (rather large) shop a the local flea market. Almost all of her inventory comes from garage sales.

No wonder all these picking and storage shows are popular now.

Garage sales and the like bring out all the poor. They are uncouth as a whole.

Typically I have heard of them damaging items in order to get 'discounts'.

I'd donate my stuff for the tax deduction rather than have a bunch of low-lifes inspecting my property.

So if you go to a garage sale you're a low-life? Jesus your logic fails.

The hispanics shop early for furniture so they can resell in Mexico. You should see how some of them stack the furniture in their pickups. It's a danger to follow them on the highway. This is typical:

For the most part, yes. It's very rare anything 'great' is at a typical garage sale...it's usually old clothes that are past their life span and bric-a-brack. Beat up furniture and old computer parts.

I wish my neighborhood banned them...take it to a flea market and save your neighborhoods having to deal with all the riff-raff driving through.

'Estate sales' are a bit different, but many are calling their garage sales the same thing today.

Estate sales can be great to find great audio gear, vintage furniture (esp popular 1950's styles today), and even vehicles. The only clothing I have seen at these types of sales has been high end and like new as opposed to a pair of beat up Wranglers.

Make friends with a tow truck driver and have him swing by when it happens and share in the profits. :p

I liked the guy in the shitty beat up Lexus who rolled up like he was king shit and tried to haggle me down to half my asking price on an already low priced excellent condition PC. I basically got in his face and told him to fuck off. He came back 15 minutes later and bought it at full price. :D

If I ever want to get rid of anything, I just throw it at the end of my driveway and sure enough it will be gone within a few hours.

That's why you pick and choose what garage sales you go to. If you go to a poor place garage sale you are likely going to get some beat up stuff. But for kids clothes if you go to the nicer subdivisions you'll likely end up with nearly brand new stuff for pennies on the dollar. Especially in the infant through 3T or 4T stuff kids outgrow clothes so fast they'll be out of it before it's tore up or grungy. A LOT of clothes I have for my kids are garage sale scores. You just have to hit the right places.

I ran into these "resellers" on craiglist. Found a posting of a piece of furniture I was interested in and met up with this guy at a local storage. He had like two storage garage full of all kind of crap that looked like it was pickings from various yard sales/real estate sales. He said that's what he does. I got what I wanted and even a couple of additional things. I paid what I felt comfortable with and I'm sure he made a few bucks off the deal. It's all good.

I guess I'm poor because I've got tons of tools and other various stuff from garage sales.

Me too. I've bought tons of awesome cheap tools at garage sales. I stopped at one just last Friday and bought a nice axe for cheap.

There are a lot of blue collar people in my neighborhood getting rid of tools and good shop stuff, there are also a lot of people who have the same crap in their garage sales every weekend. You learn really quickly which places aren't worth taking a peek.

I had a yard sale once. The ad specifically stated it was to start at 8AM. Some nimrod knocked on my front door at 5AM when the lights went on wanting to go through my stuff. By 6AM when I started setting up, there were already 3 or 4 cars parked in my driveway.

Hard core yardsalers are very annoying.
