Garage fire. Caused by Volt? Maybe, maybe not.

That article is completely pointless. Until they can actually get an idea where the fire started publishing any articles about it are just the news media trying to cash in on something that could spark publicity or controversy.

Damn Government Motors Junk.... 🙂

We should all be jumping to conclusions like in the unfounded Toyota Acceleration problems...

more likely to be a shitty electrician doing the install for the charging outlet(these do need 220 or whatever right?)

Yeah, um, so there's two cars, one had years of development by a massive corporation, and the other was converted by someone on their own. Hmm, which would I be more likely to think caused the issue?

Also, ask Neil Young.

I feel like I should put a disclaimer that I'm being facetious. Yes plenty of instances of mega-corps disregarding safety and etc, etc.

Definitely deplorable that the first media instinct is to hint at it being the Volt.

I do think that electric vehicles should strongly cause review of electrical setups, and I could see it creating issues for many people (I can just imagine people trying to plug some $1 cable into a high current/voltage system and then try to run that a couple of hundred feet where the plug doesn't properly fit the car). Actually, I bet we'll see a glut of people throwing hooks onto power lines to charge their cars.

I like the little update they have at the bottom of the page.

*UPDATE: GM has issued a statement saying that everyone should, "Let The Experts Do Their Work."

Until they can actually figure out what happened there's not point to publicize it. People's garages catch fire all the time for tons of different reasons.

there's a garage fire.
How to spark interest in such a common event?
Of course, let's cite something that generates hype!
The title is so misleading that it sounds almost like some dailytech artciles, or like if they have a hidden agenda.

Remember all the Toyota sticking accelerator insurance fraud? Suddenly we are going to see a lot of houses "burned down by Volts".

Too early to say what caused it, could have been the ghost of Michael Jackson. IF the Volt is to blame for this, though, it will be a devastating blow to the car, particularly because it will probably be hard to find out exactly how it happened.
American cars starting on fire for no reason? Yeah that sounds about right. My girlfriend's parents had their Ford randomly start on fire and it almost burned the house down (attached garage).

http://www.switchfires.com/recall.htm
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Ford Motor Co. have issued several recalls of millions of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles as a result of a defective cruise control switch that can lead to a spontaneous fire, even when the vehicle is turned off, parked and unattended.
:awe: :awe: :awe:

Well if they had the 220 line installed, Best Buy's Geek Squad is doing the installs. I wouldn't let GS install a light bulb let alone a 220v charging system for a brand new hybrid vehicle.

I investigated probably 50 or 60 homes where it was believed that the vehicle in the garage caused the fire. In about half of the cases, it was actually the car that did cause the fire. Often due to a cigarette ash on the seat, or in the ash tray that as not extinguished. Smoking is the number one cause of in garage car fires. A cigarette ash can last for days smoldering. Don't forget the number of people who still put or have cardboard under their vehicles to catch oil drippings. Many fires have been caused by the under vehicle heat (Including Volt) that could ignite oily cardboard. These things take lots of time to investigate and often the responsible issues was burned in the fire and we can only theorize what happened.

ford recalled that about 7 years ago. ive been getting a letter every 3 months or so for those 7 years. im pushing my luck, especially now that brake fluid is leaking somewhere and there is oil spayed on that switch. i really need to get my recall done, because im not worried if my truck catches fire at my house, but if it does it in a parking garage somewhere or the like, it might kill someone.

Interesting. Thanks for mentioning this 😎

When I started driving cars and trucks it was a momentus occasion if you got a car above 100K Miles without an engine rebuild or at least major engine/transmission work. The cars today easily top 150 - 200 K miles with hardly any maintenance beyond oil changes.
