Garage Door problem....HELP!

This problem just happened out of the blue on Tuesday evening.
I have an older sears craftsman single garage door opener with no sensors.
model #139.53600
when I press the opener, the bulb on the garage door opener lights up but nothing happens.
I just hear clicks. Then, after 2 seconds, a buzzing noise starts from inside the motor and lasts for about 60-80 seconds.
that's it, the door never opens.

anyone know what the problem could be?

I can very easily open and close the door manually.....but ofcourse, here in upstate NY, that is a pain.

I just moved into this house 5 months ago and this door opener was already installed with no manuals.
I tried taking the power cord out and putting it back in after an hour or two, but it didn't help.

is the thing busted?

Sounds like the motor is busted.

so should I even bother to replace it or just buy a new one.
my existing opener is 1/2hp.

what and where should I look to buy a new one?
sears/HD/lowes?
can I install them on my own?
any brands/models I should stay away from?
thanks

stripped worm gear?
or is it a belt or chain drive?

either way, prob bad motor or judging by the sounds you say it makes a busted/worn/stripped drive gear

sorry for being ignorant but how do I distinguish between belt/chain drive and worm gear?

*Edit*
did some research and mine is a chain drive.
so I should just stick with chain drive or pay someone to come in and install a new one and possibly go with belt drive openers with sensors?

installation is typically < 100 bucks and well worth it (from someone who just did it themselves last year and should have paid someone to do it).

sometimes menards/lowes have free installtion with purchase specials...

Before assuming the opener is dead, take a look at the spring coils that help lift the garage door. Make sure that these coils are not broken, because if they are, the opener won't be strong enough to lift the door without them.

Also make sure the door handle is not in locked position.

Once, my door handle was turned halfway and when the door shut, it locked itself. My motor almost burned out trying to open the door.
