Garage Door Opener Help! :(

warcrow

Lifer
My garage door opener is on the fritz! Here is the scenario:

- I can open the garage door fine with my remote morning, noon and night.
- Wife cannot (intermittantly) open garage door in the mornings, but always can at night (6pm-ish).

This is so odd. She leaves about a hour after I do in the mornings. The only thing I can think of is the ambient temperature in the mornings being cooler, so the metal has contracted? WTF...I dont get it.

HELP! 🙁

Does your system have the sensors on each side of the door? I'm having a similar problem with mine -- apparently, in the mornings, my door won't shut unless I hold down the button the entire time. If I just push the button, it goes down a little bit, and pops right back up.

At night, though, the door shuts fine. I think it's got something to do with direct sunlight hitting one of the sensors in the morning.

have you tried swapping out the batteries in the remote/ getting a new remote? If you can operate the door fine w/ your remote then its probably not the door. And if she's leaving an hour after you leave, wouldn't the metal be less contracted when shes using it?

Thats an interesting suggestion BW. I was also thinking....in the morning, her batteries (in her remote) might be weak. Weaker batteries have a hard time providing juice...hrm

Mine's got to be a sensor problem or sensitivity problem, as the problem exists both when using the remote and the button by the garage door.

Do you still have the same problem when using the wall-mounted button?

yes, its caused by sunlight.

have your wife when she goes to shut the door, create a shadow over one of the eyes which seems to be fully in the light, cover the eye with only her shadow, it should close.

used to have this problem with our garage door,

realign the eyes ... the morning sun maybe is expanding the metal clips and misaligning the eyes ???

What's the best way to do this?

If you've still got the manual for the opener, it should go into detail about how to readjust the sensors. When I moved into the new house a few months ago, I googled the model of my opener to find an online manual.

She holds the button in on the wall.

What can be done to fix the problem? You can't make the sun rise other than in the East and, unfortunately, I can't rotate my house. 😉

Yea....how is this fixed?

i dont know. i think i just have never opened the garage door at that time anymore.

i think we realigned are beams and it worked better. nothing positive though.

and i believe it was a seasonal thing depending upon where the sun rose in the east etc. i think it was more winter time but i forget

You might also try adjusting the sensitivity of the door resistance. I'm not sure about all openers, but mine has a couple of levers on the side that control the amount of resistance of the door. If the door goes halfway down and reverses direction, this could be your problem.
