garage door light bulb question *solved* now closet door q

bought a townhouse some months ago and one of the problems I'm trying to resolve today is the garage lighting.
there is an existing light bulb in the garage that works from inside the kitchen. all good there.
there is another lightbulb ON the 1/2HP craftsman garage opener which does not work.
naturally, I thought the bulb went bad and so I replaced it.
as soon as I replaced it, the new one works but it never shuts off!
I tried to shut the garage door, open it, nothing. the bulb stays on.

anyone have any clue?
upon closer inspection of the door opener, it is an old sears craftsman door opener.
it has only one car remote which my wife keeps.
I just managed to clean out all the boxes from the garage and with the impending snow, i would like to keep atleast one car in the garage.
the problem arises when I come back from work in the evening, open the garage door and park the car. no bulb means complete darkness and then I have to switch on my headlights, then go into the kitchen and switch on the other garage bulb.

I knew I should have just stayed with renting........this house stuff is killing me.....

The garage door opener light is designed to stay on for a preset time after the door is opened or closed. Just give it a few minutes, it will shut off on its own.... check back in about 10 minutes.. I think they typically stay lit for 5 mins or so...

never thought about it.
should the bulb be lit if I install it when the garage door is shut ?
I will go try that right now.
when I replaced the bulb, the garage door was open, and I did wait about 5-7 minutes trying to figure out why the bulb won't go off. I also then proceeded to close the garage door and the light did not go off.
maybe now I will let it be for 10 minutes and see what happens.

Ok, so now you're saying you don't actually know how a garage door opener light works?

Regardless, if it actually IS "stuck" on, the easiest fix would be to unscrew the bulb and get a motion-sensing socket, then screw the bulb into that. Set the sensitivity on the motion sensor to high, and when someone opens the door, it will automatically turn the bulb on, then go off after your preset time.

Also, just an aside, it COULD be "stuck" in the on position, but sounds more likely that you were just too impatient to realize it was working fine.

I think mine stays on for about 5 minutes, after you open or close the door. On mine you can also "tap" the switch (as opposed to pressing it normally which opens/closes the door) very quickly and it will simply turn the light on or off.

Is there not an on/off button for the openers's light bulb on the wall plate or the remote? Normally the lights stay on for 5-10 minutes after the door shuts and then turns off. But we have a button by the one to open the door that is for turning off the light....

Do you have the manual (or cna you find oen online) to see how it's supposed to work.

The answer is ---> Impatience.

I just didn't wait and did not realise that the bulb is supposed to stay ON for a few minutes so ppl can get off their car, pick their stuff and all this takes time.

ha.....feel so relieved, am gonna open some stella and watch mtv2.

very very thanks guys.......

on a side note, I"m also having a tough time fixing my bedroom closet rolling doors.
the wardrobe closet has 4 individual rolling doors.
each side has a left and right.doors on extreme sides are on the outer railing and they work fine.
the inside doors, they keep falling of the upper railing at a particular point.
I'm perplexed.

The rail might be bent causing them to fall off. Normally all it is is a piece of metal in the shape of a J. The rollers from the door fit into the bottom part. SO it the J looks more like a backwards L, you might have to bend the edge back up a tad.

the rail is not bent.
after some more investigation, the space between the top of the door and the railing on both the outer (good) doors is quite less.
on the problematic doors, the space is distance is more.
it seems that when I hang the inside doors to the rails, the rollers are staying right on the edge of the rails, even as I try to push them in as much as possible.
I messed around with the roller thingy on top of the door, tried to change their angle et all, still nothing.
