Garage door hit my car

So I lost my garage key like a year ago at my apartment, meaning I can't use the cardkey reader right on the driveway. I've been getting in by parking my car outside the garage door and then running inside, hitting the switch, running outside and driving in. This takes like 10 seconds really, so stop making it sound like it takes 2 minutes to get back into my car and the door is obviously going to close.

There are weight sensors inside and outside. Sometimes I park in the street and go in and hit the switch. Then I pull into the driveway. If I'm slow enough the door will start closing but the second I get on the driveway, the door pops back open because the weight sensor knows I'm there.

Well I parked on the driveway 3 days ago and I opened the door with the switch. It's a sliding door btw and as I'm driving in, the door slides shut on me. I freak out and I go oh crap. REVERSE! Too late. Bam. Hits the side of my car right behind the left blinker. What's worse is it doesn't pop back open. It stops. Then it tries to close again. I have no choice but to back the fvck out. This pulls on the metal gate and drags it back. Oh God I think to myself. I just repaired my bumper from a rear end collision, and my car was spanking clean on the outside since this also got rid of old scratches.

Now there's a fat dent on the side of my car.

Today and yesterday I did some parallel parking for the first time in a while (school just started, and I'm back at my apt again), and today as I came out I noticed my front license plate is bent. That means either I hit someone or someone hit me. I'm guessing it's the latter.

GRRRRRrrrrr

Anyways, I dialed my apartment manger's # in like no time when the garage door hit me, but no response. I've been too busy these few days to get a hold of her but I'll do that tomorrow. Will they be of any help or do I have to fix this dent all by myself?

Edit: Clarifications because some people want to be asses

1) The door closes after some time (I don't know how long, it seems to be about 10 secs at most) if there's NOTHING on the sensor. So If I park my car ont he driveway and open the door, it should theoretically stay open. Have I tried it? Yes. Many times, that's also how you exit the garage by sensor....

2) The button to open my door is inside the garage next to the door. It's 10 steps away from my car at most. I'm back in my car after hitting the button before the door even opens entirely.

3) The problem is the sensor didn't detect my car on this day. If I had my card key, this accident still could've happened.

4) Has it happened again? No. The next day I sat on the driveway for 30 seconds before pulling in with teh door fully open. It was a malfunction on ONE DAY that caused this accident, so stop blaming the card key.

5) When does the garage door close usually? It stays open long enough for me to pull into the garage, park, get my ass out and lock the car before it starts closing usually. This is from the time my car leaves the sensor outside I'm guessing or maybe it triggers the one inside also to keep it open.

6) To tell me that the door starts closing when I barely pulled in is weird, especially when the sensor should know I'm right outside. Clearly something went wrong.

A year and you couldn't replace your garage key? That's some serious laziness.

Dude get out of the car and move it. If it wont move make it move. Cut off the power or something.

You are completely at fault. The apt will not cover your mistakes.

I don't completely understand your post, but it sounds like you were doing something stupid and finally got caught.

It's not a weight sensor, it's an optical sensor and if your car is halfway in the beam of the sensor probably wasn't broken so it didn't think there was anything there because your front tires were past the beam and your rear tires weren't to the beam yet...or they were past the beam also but the rear of your car was overhanging. The sensors are located near the floor on either side of your garage door.

Edit-I wouldn't count on the building manager to do a damned thing in this situation. It's entirely your fault.

It's pretty amazing the effort some people will go to just to BE lazy.

How is it their fault that the door hit your car? You tried to squeeze through while it was closing. If you are using something improperly, that's your fault, not theirs.

Would you try to make them pay for your hospital bill if you stuck your finger in an electrical outlet?

And now someone else's fault for his stupidity on top of it.

I really am having a hard time not laughing at the absurdity of this story.

What are you expecting? Did your message say how you lose the garage a year ago, but by laziness you decided to do a monkey act to bypass the door security every day, one day this doesn't work, so you want them to help you fix it?

Think about how stupid this looks.
