One side of the door frame (or door jamb casing?) (4" wide) and door jamb (2.5" wide) of my garage door facing backyard is rotten and I need to replace it.

What kind of wood type should I use? Seems pine is too soft & MDF is not suitable for the purpose.

Ideas?

I have cut off the bottom and threw it in the trash can.

I still want to replace the full height of the door jamb.

Why would pine be too soft?

Mahogany makes for a nice door jamb.

Most of them are made of pine. You can get pre milled exterior door frame peices at depot, or your local door company.

You could also bring in your door and have them put it in a new frame. Usually only costs 100 bucks or so. You get new frame, brick mould and a new sill that way.

Yeah probably pine or spruce, basically just standard hardware store dimensional lumber. Nothing too special. Pretty sure all the 2x4's in my basement are spruce. Conifer trees tend to be mostly used as they are super common.

I already bought pine lumbers yesterday. But when I got home I just felt that pine is so light that I wonder whether it's up to the job.

Since the consensus is pine, I'll go ahead and use it. Thanks!
