Gamma in games making dark colors black, light colors white.

I've tried setting the gamma to 0.5, but even then when I alt tab back to windows there's a split second when the gamma is TOTALLY messed up, I'm talking contrast and gamma all the way up. Taskbar (which should be gray) is white.

Funny thing is, screenshotting it doesn't work.

So anyone know what gamma I should set it to? Will this even work? This is making me think even if I set it to the perfect setting, it's like the drivers see "ut2004.exe" and shift all the colors lighter or darker. This would reduce the range of colors rendered and improve performance because the colors rendered are less accurate. End result is Text. How the walls are...black. Completely.

Basically what I see for a split second when I alt-tab is the grey color that this text is in turns the same color of white as the darker-grey outline above and below this text (which ordinarily is the same color as the main grey that the topics appear in in each forum category). Or to be even more precise.

edit: after alt-tabing while playing with the settings I've come up with something pretty close to what my desktop looks like normally, however no matter what the darker colors are still shifted darker, and the lighter colors are shifted lighter. I just don't know what to do.
