Some people shouldn't be allowed to have kids, and some shouldn't be allowed to own expensive consumer electronics.

Still on my first one.

Blame on the users?

While I am sure some are due to user's negligence, it alone cannot justify and explain the unacceptable failure rates of the console. All my friends who own one are very tech savvy, yet some still experienced failures.

Bought 1 only November 2006 (Thanksgiving)... It is on its way back from repairs now. I love my 360!

Got one at launch, still runs fine. My friend did too. Actually, 4 of my friends bought them close to launch and they all work fine aswell.

*shrug* 9 does kinda sound like something on his end. Maybe he has a lot of surges in his house, or maybe he's enclosing the thing.

The guy who lost 11 on 1UP was told by MS that it's probably the electricity in his house. Problem is his dad is a Master Electrician -- owned. 360 is possibly the worst piece of consumer hardware ever produced.

How does having a "master electrician" dad (or so he claims) prevent power surges and brownouts?

The chances of someone getting 11 defective XBOX 360s at random is statistically nonexistent.

Microsoft should just do what Sprint did; boot these problem customers from their service.

Because MS tried to blame it on the electrical wiring in the guy's house.

When his third 360 broke, one customer service rep suggested he look into the wiring at his house; electricity problems could have been causing the mess-ups. Problem: none of his other systems (not to mention his several computers and other electronics) have experienced any major problems, and his father is, coincidentally, an electrician. The specific suggestion was brought up by Microsoft customer service again after the eighth console repair. This time, just to be certain, Justin had a contractor come to the house and check the wiring, where he was told that everything was in order, with no abnormalities in voltage of any of house outlets. Nevertheless, customer service has continued to suggest this as a potential cause.

My 1st died, so did my bro's, despite proper set-up and operation, he had the nyko cooler on his as well. So, owner error isn't the only significant cause of RRoD. However, it wouldn't surprise me if the owners suffering 6+ failures, weren't afflicted by Xbox 360 Munchausen syndrome by proxy, to get their 15min. ;)

The design flaw of the xbox 360 is well known and well documented, it has nothing to do with electrical problems. And to suggest 11 xbox 360 failures from electrical fluctuations while every other electrical appliance is just fine is just ludicrous.

I wouldn't say that's an accurate statement. Perhaps it is the faultiest, but build quality issues can always be resolved, and if MS can actually put out a 360 this fall with 65nm chips that falls in the 3%-5% failure rate, many of these problems will be forgotten in a couple years.

Even if for some reason my 360 would break, I'd still spend the money on another one as opposed to a PS3 or Wii right now.

Even using the unlikely, if the common 30% failure rate often referred to on the internet, the odds of this are astronomical (though obviously not impossible). I'd like to see where the guy keeps it...

I guess the 360 is like a BMW, it's great when it's not in the shop:laugh:.

No no no, it's user error, dammit!

If I'm calculating it correctly, given a 25% failure rate on both the original and refurb units, 3.8 owners per 1,000,000 would be expected to have 9 straight failures.

Given 10 million units you'd expect 38 owners to have 9 straight redrings.

If the failure rate is 30%, it jumps to 196 owners.

interesting, how many would expect 0 failures?

By my complex cauculations I have determined that the answer to your question is:

75% assuming 25% failure rate
70% assuming 30% failure rate

I'm on my 2nd but since I got it I haven't played it much at all (I played the 1st one for gears of war exclusively). The most I know of personally is a friend who is on his 4th one, his 4th one broke but he bought an Elite.

Are you saying the 4th that broke was an Elite, or after he had the 4th break he bought an Elite?

I've haven't heard of any RROD's from Elites yet, but that's most likely due to being relatively new on the market. Maybe MS also put the extra heatsink in all of those.

His 4th one broke he said screw it and wanted HDMI anyways so he just got the elite.
