I was thinking of picking up some Sennheiser HD280PRO or HD555 headphones for music, movies, and gaming.

I also see other headphones specifically made for gaming (like SRS 3-D audio), so how are the SENN headphones for gaming?

I have a set of Sennheiser HD490's I paid $40 about 5 years ago & I'm very happy with them ... surround in games sounds great & music/movies are very good as well, the only regret I have is that they are open-ear so background noise penetrates easily.

i have the hd280 pros and they are excellent. i got them mostly because they are the closed ones, most of the other senns are not closed.

the hd280s were a little tight around my head when they were brand new, but they get more comfortable after a while it seems.

Wheewww.. Those better be some magic bean type headphones for 400 bucks. That's more than the cost of my computer.

I have to scratch the original idea of picking up HD 555 or HD280. Circuit City doesn't keep it in stock at the stores.

Between these 3, what would you get?

i had bad experiences with 5.1 headphones. i honestly think that eax surround is better for games than true 5.1. Returned 2 pairs. Then i got Senn HD-595's and couln't be happier. My first pair of high end cans.

Why do you have to get them at CC? You can get the HD280s for $85 at Amazon.

Good advice. I have the HD-555's and I'm looking at a pair of SR-80's or SR-60's for portable use and music.

yeah you can get hd280s easily online for $80 or so. I had also considered the 555s, because they are supposed to be good, but at the time i wanted something to seal off sound from the outside.

High quality stereo headphones:

The good: Great audio quality and clarity, music will sound great, sounds will be sharp and defined, etc.
The bad: No real positional audio, and no post-processing will give you true surround sound
The ugly: Sets you back a pretty penny

5.1 Gaming headphones:

The good: Varying degrees of surround capability, generally do very well with spatial positioning and adds a distinct advantage in FPS games
The bad: Sound quality is generally mediocre and definitely won't blow you away
The ugly: Some sets are constructed cheaply and will either have unbalanced sound or require software adjustment to be passably equal in volume across the channels

I'd say get the good stereo headphones and stay away from the 5.1 gaming headphones, but if you're a heavy FPS player the 5.1s will benefit you more - and audio quality isn't really an issue with games.

Are you sure of the facts???

I think thats a bad recommendation, my 5.1 headphone delivers great sound for the price it offers. It supports Dolby Digital, DTS and Pro-Logic II, i had great experience with it when playing FPS games like Quake 4 where you can hear whos coming at the back- very handy when playing multiplayer. Also you can setup virtual speakers with the software that comes with it. Amazing quality when you play HD/DVD movies. I would never buy stereo headphones for gaming.

SR-80's are amazing, can't say enough good things about them and they don't need an amplifier for portable use. I use them for everything including FPS gaming. Only drawback is that the foam around the ears can get really uncomfortable after a while. 2 hours would be pushing it ... by then the cartilage in my ears is pretty sore. Apparently you can flip the foam around and it's a lot more comfortable without any negative effect on sound but I haven't tried that yet.

Buy 'em!

Too many headphone threads lately.. Anyway I said it before.. If your primary concern is gaming in your PC and not listening to music then go for Senheiser PC series.. I have the Senheiser PC-160 SK edition and I couldn't be happier for gaming..

If you want a really nice set of headphones and a mic included get the HD-280 Pros with the boom mic, they're ~ $160, the mic is going to be incredibly high quality. I really want to swap out my HD280s for this headset. But I dont have the $80 to upgrade :(. I find that I can pinpoint almost any enemy very precisely.

EDIT: HMD280 is the model.
