Load times shouldn't be a huge issue, I would think, because surely you won't be loading new levels that frequently...?
Since USB can have 480mbps max throughput, that's 60MB/s theoretical, or probably 40MB/s in real terms. I get maybe 50MB/s if I'm lucky with my 7200rpm drives, sustained (and ~80MB or more burst), so I would guess (no experience), that you wouldn't really have any serious performance issues.

usb uses more cpu time an system resorces plus cant sustain its ma thru-put.

firewire is like ethernet ...firewire is faster overall an uses less cpu time, id pick firewire any day
