Gaming wide area networks

Is it possible with xbox 360/ps3 consoles to create a wireless lan that could be connected to over wifi and not be logged into xbox live/psn?

I have a few people in my small town and I'd like to set up such a service so we could play online games since the available high speed internet is really a joke.

Now then in theory you could create a large wireless network. You'll need strong directional antennas and/or repeaters to get everyone on the same network.

you would probably want a point to multi point type setup.
