Ive been stuck with AGP now for a while, and currently have a FX5900 Ultra 256MB vid card, and benchmark's on the thing is HORRIBLE. Im going to be upgrading my mobo anyways and im looking to go with PCI-express. What card would you all suggest for game's that are currently on the market, and soon to be released game's like Battlefield 2 Ect ect? I play mostly FPS's. I usually upgrade my video card at least once a year. And im going (i think) with the DFI Lanparty Nf4 PCI-express motherboard with amd64 3200+ 939 CPU. Thanks

How much money are you looking to spend? What resolution do you play at (and/or what native resolution is your monitor, if applicable)?

I have a 6800GT myself and it's great (though in AGP), but in the PCI-Express realm, the ATI X800XL will give you most of the performance of the 6800GT, but quite a bit cheaper.

Edit: And welcome to the forums. :)

I would go with either a x800xl or a 6600gt. both will get you through todays and tommorrows games alright. i wouldnt go too high end because as you said you replace vid cards every year or so. If you get the SLI version of the DFI, definately get the 6600gt, that way in a year, instead of upgrading our card, you can just add a second 6600gt.

wow, Didnt know i would get a reply this fast, yet 3 of em =) I have a 17" monitor, and I play in 1024x768 or whatever it is. Im trying to pay my credit cards off, so my budget actually has a limit this year lol. So im not really sure what my budget is. I noticed Tigerdirect has the 6800ultra's (only if I could get the financed thing) for like 15$/month I think it was.

I was ALWAYS hesitent of purchasing another ATI product, since I had had nothing but problems with them, and same goes for AMD as well, until I built my other system which is AMD64 3200+ with ATI 9800XT 256mb, and now I love the two, so now im actually hesitent on buying Nvidia cards.

The 5900 Ultra isnt that bad of a card. I cant imagine that your having trouble playing any games in 1024x768. Except maybe FarCry, but your not missing much.

What sort of system do you have now?

You may just want to wait until the next gen ati/nvidia cards come out.

Not a budget card :p

It's a mid-range card which can still hold its own. Plus you can buy another one and pop it in if you are going to SLI.

On the system im going to upgrade, here is what I have

Soyo Dragon 2 Platinum Mobo
P4 3.0ghz 800FSB
FX5900 Ultra 256MB Vid
1GB (2x512) PC3200 Mem
SB Audigy 2 Sound
120GB 7200RPM Master Drive
200GB 7200 8MB Cache Slave Drive

Im looking to upgrade the mobo, video and CPU. Everything else I have im going to plop into the new one. I ran 3dmark05 on this, and scored a whopping 1156 with no other program's running. I usually did not get more than 7 or 8 FPS on any of the demo's.

NOT UPGRADING BELOW

AMD64 3200+
Abit KV8-Max3 Mobo
1GB (2x512) PC3200 Ram
ATI 9800XT 256MB Video
Audigy 2 platinum EX Sound
120GB SATA 7200 HDD

And this system BLOWS AWAY the one listed up top that I am upgrading.

I Dont have to have the TOP of the Line. But I really want a card that will play all of the upcoming game's that are coming out within the next 9 months to a year with NO PROBLEM Whatsoever.

The Geforce FX series was really weak at DX9, hence why the system with a 9800XT destroys your 5900U in 3dmark05.

If you're only going to be gaming at 1024x768, I'd say a 6600GT would be great for you. :)

No, all the 6600GT's are 128MB cards...IMO that's probably all you need unless you're gaming at fairly high resolutions.

If I remember correctly, I got ~4500 in 3dmark05 on my 6800GT, but it probably should have been closer to 5000 (I need to reformat and reinstall Windows, but I'm lazy :p).

I think the X800XL would be a good choice if you're planning on spending a little more money than a 6600GT costs.

Yeah...financing any piece of computer hardware would be a pretty bad idea if you can at all avoid it...you'll still be paying for it by the time it's worth like $30 :p
