Hey everyone just to let you know I'm almost computer illiterate so bare with me.

I'm building a computer from scratch. It's going to be used mostly for games.
The only things that I already know I want is a NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT
I want a motherboard that can support that videocard and support an AMD CPU.
I don't know what kind of AMD CPU I should get. It needs to have 1GHz.
I'm going to need lots of RAM to support games like World of Warcraft.

My price range is under $2000.

I'm going to be running Windows XP (if that matters).

And I have a newb question. What is the difference between Socket 939 and Socket 940?
Will something compatible with Socket 939 fit into a Socket 940?

Please help me. I'm lost and confused.

Ok, First, there are a ton of possibilites that would suit you. 6600gts come in agp and pci-e versions, but I'd go for pci-e since it's newer.
Socket 939 is for high end amd cpus(like gaming fx and dual core x2), socket 940 is for servers, and 754 is for budget systems (athlon and sempron).

I'd suggest getting an nforce 4 ultra board with socket 939, a venice 3000+ cpu 939, 1gb(or more) corsair valueselect cas 2.5, 6600gt pci-e, sata hard drive(whatever size you need), a good 24pin compatible power supply, a decent case, dvd-rw drive, etc. It should be around $800-1000 depending on what you choose.

Here's a possibility for the main components. The case, hd, dvd, etc are up to you, it depends on what you like.

Motherboard $96

OR

Cpu $148

Memory $79

Video $167

Power supply $75

So far that's $565, but you still need a case, hd, dvd, xp, monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc.

Still it'll be a decent price.

OK I'm just going to use NewEgg, because I'm lazy and they are sort of just a pricing standard. (and you said you were using newegg)

CPU
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice - $147.99

Motherboard
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D - $135.00

Ram
mushkin XP3200 Dual Pack 1GB (tccd & brainpower) - $166.99

Video Card
POWERCOLOR R43C-TD3D/BULK Radeon X800XL 256MB - $285.00

DVD/RW
NEC Black IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3540A - $58.00x2= $116.00

In order to stay near $900 either go integrated and have aftermarket cooling, or get the sound card and stay stock with the cooling.

Sound Card
CREATIVE Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS OEM - $71.00

HSF
ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU 120mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan - $46.99

Personally I would get the HSF and not the soundcard, simply because your integrated will be OK and the HSF will get you farther overclocking. But at some point down the line I would invest in an Audigy simply because the sound quality really is better. Hope this helps :D .

Total (sound card) = $921.98
Total (HSF) = $897.97

Get a computer with x850xt, 4000+ SD and 2GB of 2-3-3-6 ram if you have $2000 budget.

Does your $2000 budget have to include a monitor and anything else or just the PC? If it's just the PC you have your pick of just about anything except the absolute latest.
