MY BROTHAS,

i have my main pc running an OZ deathmatch server and i play on the same machine

im just running different ports 27016 and 27015 , now i have my second rig finished and i

just picked up a router, im running 98SE on both machines,How do i find out my computers name

i know i could call my isp(optimum online) but i know they frown on what im doing, what excuse do i use for needing the name????

secondly is there a clear-cut performance advantage to seperating the server from my gaming rig, because it is rock solid and super fast

in its current configuration, i really don t feel like opening up pandoras box, besides the mrs having her own internet connection

i really don t see any advantage to the router---couldn t i just do the dual nic thang for splitting the connection

when it comes to networking im about as sharp as a marble

:confused::D:confused::D:confused:

thanks

You can set the name of either computer to whatever you would like. The configurration is under the identification tab in network properties.

As for some sort of distinct advantage between hosting and gaming on the same computer: depends on the hardware of the computer. If you want to run a dedicated server then I believe you have to play from a different computer, otherwise the server won't make the connection to itself. At least that's been my experience with most games. There is also the performance issue to consider. Depending on how much traffic you have coming to/from the game server and the load it is under should also dictate whether or not you want to play on the same computer.

Just some things to think about.

hi there,

ok its a H/L server, so if you change the port#s like i stated above, i can run the dedicated server

and join from the same machine no problem, i load it up with bots and low lag configs

and it runs smooth as silk,i was under the impression that i needed the name that my isp

gave my pc???----i did the install myself so the cable company hasn t configured anything

manually on my rig,

thanks

For other people to connect to your dedicated server all you need is the IP address and the port forwarded if you have a router. All others need to do is type in your external IP address (the one your ISP gives you) and you should be all set.

As your excuse, you can tell OO that you're using the router as a firewall...seems to work :p There are also some good reads in the FAQs at the top of the page. It should give you some background to networking. Hope this helps.

hey thanks--great idea(firewall) i tried it again last night changing ports

and even switching the server onto the different rigs, but my game server would not appear

on the updated server list within the game, i by-passed the router and released and renewed

my ip config and BOOOYAH, servers up-, so i know its just my ignorance of networking,

deep-sigh
