Gaming Server for Anandtech

Hi,

I work for a hosting company, and was thinking that I might be able to convince my boss it would be a good thing to give anandtech a free, dedicated game server for a month.

I'm thinking about something like

Dual 3.0 Ghz Intel XEON
SCSI HDD
2GB DDR RAM
10/100 nic
Windows 2003

Our datacenter is in a bandwidth exchange building, one of the largest in the country, so our ping times are spectacular. We also have 3 GigE lines and an OC-12. BGP blended.

Can anybody help me devise a plan for this? Things to say to my boss to make it worthwile?

And what happens after that first month?
-That server is easily worth $200-300 a month, you wont be able to get enough donations monthly to run it.

Also, who would manage it?

And, may I ask which hosting company you work for?

You could tell your boss that people from one of the largest online communities will be playing on this server. And these are people from Anandtech, the number 1 (or 2 if you like tomshardware) tech site, so they are people who know a little bit about computers. If you had a small advertisement when people join that said something as simple as, "This server is freely hosted by xxxx hosting company," then the business would gain great favor with this forum.

If your boss can buy that one, I would be glad to manage the box and set up all the gameservers 😉. I already host a game server for anandtech (UT2K4) but that is on my hosting box and truthfully I am running it under cost as I cannot get enough donations from this forum. People are just used to free stuff 😉

I'll talk to my boss about it. I think if this could be an anadtech sponsored thing, and not an under the table thing, he might go for it.

If the server is just sitting there, let him know that and tell him it's better to advertise with what you have than just let it sit around and use electricity
