Gaming Rig ~ 1400

What YOUR PC will be used for.

Gaming. This is a build for my brother; I figure we could do him one better than paying a zillion dollars to Alienware.

He most often talks about playing next gen MMOs like EQ next and the like.

What YOUR budget is.

1300-1400, maybe a few hundred more if it's well justified. He hasn't given me numbers set in stone, just approximations

What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

'Murika

IF YOU have a brand preference.

Don't care about brands.

If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

He needs it all, minus a mouse.

IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Not really.

What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?

1920x1080

WHEN do you plan to build it?

As soon as we have a great blue print here, and he's satisfied with it, we're making the order.

Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?

Yes. I'm sure it would spark a debate to talk about windows 8 vs 7, but it's a choice he'll have to make.

Hats off to Mfenn, as I plan on taking his build as a template. It's (currently) very affordable.

i5 4670K + GA-Z87M-D3H combo $325
Team DDR3 1600 8GB $53
Gigabyte 7970 "Ghz" 3GB $280 AR
Samsung 840 EVO $100
Seagate 7200RPM 1TB $60 AP
Lite-ON DVD Burner $18
Rosewill Hive 650W $60 AR

However, to appease my brother, I'll need a flashier case, preferrably something in red. I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811156273 but I'm not sure if it'll be too cramped a fit for the video card. I'm also concerned for the fewer amount of frontal USB ports, espeically USB 3.0

Secondly, there's http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146086 . Seems bigger, has more ports, but it comes in at a higher price (albiet without shipping costs, unlike the previously linked raid max).

While he has a preference for red, I'm sure my brother would cave for just about any “cool” looking case. I'm just worried about the more pragmatic sides, like fans, space, ports, and of course affordability.

As for a monitor, I linked him http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824014345 as an example of sorts. Though I mentioned his love for MMOs of late, he usually is playing some kind of twitch FPS (kid grew up on CS). He didn't really seem to give a rip about the unparalleled beauty of IPS, so I figured a faster gaming TN would be better for him. Given that, do you guys think this model is ok, or are we better served going elsewhere?

I hear a lot about mechanical keyboards. I think a backlit keyboard would be more important to my brother. I myself have a Saitek Eclipse II, but it seems pricey right now on Newegg. Has anybody else had luck with a not-so-expensive backlit keyboard?

IMO mechanical keyboards are best for double tapping for dodging. If the games he doesn't play include such a thing or require it then you can skip this until later. If you choose to investigate this further I suggest reading the guide over at Overclock.net here.

Hats off to your config. Whoever put it together did a great job. 😉

But seriously, I would avoid that Raidmax case, especially at $60. The Red Phantom 410 on the other hand looks damn nice. Doesn't hurt that it's also a high quality case.

As for the monitor, a 120Hz+ panel is great for a twice gamer. What you've picked out looks good, but the ASUS VG248QE 144Hz is also popular. I'm sure that lehtv will drop by and elaborate on the real-world pros and cons.

I would much enjoy that. I am not so well versed in monitor lore.

In the meantime, perhaps you could clear something up for me that I hadn't asked about earlier. My brother won't be able to guarantee a wired connection. As such I need to outfit this machine with a wireless card (unless they snuck this functionality into the mobo). I have a netgear card in my machine that works reliably, but this isn't 2008 anymore. Is there a preferred option, or is it impossible to go wrong here?
